Huawei HarmonyOS Announcement

As expected, Huawei unveiled its nova 14 series smartphones in China today. Like last year, we get a total of three new nova phones with the nova 14 Ultra standing out from the pack. It is armed with a 50MP periscope camera, an LTPO 3.0 OLED and up to 1TB storage. As usual with Huawei releases, there’s no info on the chipset used in any of the three new phones.

The Ultra model gets the fancier specs, including a 6.81-inch quad curved OLED with FHD+ resolution and an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. This is an LTPO 3.0 panel, and Huawei claims it offers improvements in power consumption. It also features Kunlun glass protection and offers up to 5,500 nits peak local brightness.

There are two shooters upfront with a 50MP lens which supports ultrawide (0.8x) shots as well as an 8MP lens with 2x optical zoom for selfie portraits.

The back houses a trio of cameras alongside a spectral sensor for color data. There’s a 50MP main shooter with a variable f/1.4 – f/4.0 aperture and OIS, alongside a 13MP ultrawide and the previously mentioned 50MP periscope with 3.7x optical zoom. All three sensors are of the RYYB variety.

Elsewhere, nova 14 Ultra boots HarmonyOS 5 and features a 5,500 mAh silicon carbon battery with 100W fast charging. The phone is IP68/69 water and dust resistant and supports two-way satellite connectivity in China.

Huawei nova 14 Ultra starts at CNY 4,199 ($582) for the 256GB trim and goes up to CNY 4,999 ($693) for the 1TB storage version.

nova 14 and nova 14 Pro

The other two nova 14 members dial down on the specs department. Nova 14 Pro brings a 6.7” LTPO OLED (FHD+ 120Hz) while nova 14 gets a 6.7” OLED (FHD+ 120Hz). The Pro variant is outfitted with same 50MP + 8MP dual front cameras as the Ultra while nova 14 makes do with a single 50MP front-facing shooter.

Nova 14 Pro also inherits the Ultra’s main 50MP sensor with variable aperture and OIS but dials down to a 12MP telephoto lens and 8MP ultrawide. Nova 14 gets a simpler triple camera setup with a 50MP main shooter, and the same 12MP telephoto and 8MP ultrawide lenses.
