Leakster: Honor is developing its own 1-inch sensor for the Magic8 RSR Porsche Design

Honor Mobile hardware Rumors

Honor’s upcoming flagship Magic8 series will include models ranging from 6.3” to 6.8”, writes leakster Smart Pikachu on Weibo (Honor will reportedly get into mini phones soon). What’s interesting is that the top of the line Honor Magic8 RSR Porsche Design will feature a 1” sensor that was developed in-house, according to the leakster.

The RSR phone will put that sensor behind a lens with a variable aperture. This lens will be able to open wide to gather more light in the dark while still being able to close down for day shots.

As for the sensor itself, it’s not clear what might have motivated Honor to develop one in-house – what does it have in mind that it can’t get from Sony, Samsung or OmniVision?

Leakster: Honor is developing its own 1-inch sensor for the Magic8 RSR Porsche Design

At one point there were rumors that Huawei would develop its own sensor for the Pura 70 models, but the Ultra ended up with a Sony sensor (IMX989, 1”, 50MP), while the Pro and Pro+ used OmniVision (OV50H, 1/1.3” 50MP). Let’s see if Honor has better luck than its former parent company.

Anyway, the custom 1” sensor will only be used in the pricey Magic8 RSR, but if it proves good enough (and if the company can get costs down over time), it might also be used by future Honor flagships.

While we wait for more details, you can check out our head-to-head article that compares the Honor Magic7 RSR with the Magic7 Pro. They have very similar camera hardware, though the RSR uses upgraded components. Check out the article to see how much of a difference that made.

Giving the RSR upgraded components over the Pro is a good move because it gives people to spend more for the RSR for what would be otherwise a slightly different look for €300 more.
