Had to go on a short trip today. Took my philips SHH9700 earphones with me for wearing convenience and to get isolation in the crowded train. The design of GM200 maybe outdated and ugly which I apparently think is not the truth anyway. The so called ugly design served me a purpose today. Everyone knows that in a crowded train it is not advisable to put your phone in the shirt pocket. So I put my phone in the front jeans pocket but the problem with most phones is that even with dedicated music keys or shake or touch controls, it is difficult to change tracks once the phone is inside the pocket. So the phone has to be taken out each time you want to change tracks. Just imagine the inconvenience of having to take out the phone every now and then in a crowded train. You'd rather quit the idea of listening to music in the first place. This is the case with even most music phones. But with GM200, it is quite different. Even inside an inch of denim, I could easily access the music buttons placed on the front. The indentations in the navi key serves exactly this purpose. Even the volume keys i.e the up and down keys are ergonomically placed to give you quick access in such tight spaces. Why do people need fancy controls if it is not practical solution in a public place like the train. The to and fro journey took about 4 hours and all the time I was listening to my music collection in peace isolated from the surrounding hassle and bustle. how convenient could this get. This is exactly what i like about this phone. Nothing fancy but practical.

But one feature missing now in the firmware update is that the player or radio automatically shuts down when you access the java menu. I really liked that feature. Still there are a number of bugs to be fixed. Altleast the updates are free for 1 year. that's a blessing.

One more thing with the new firmware update is that you can now acess musicplayer and run it in the background while transferring files via bluetooth. The player can be accessed anytime with the mp3 button. This will come in very handy when transferring large number of files.

Nokias can give speeds of 160-190 KBps.

It not only supports wma, but also LC-AAC, HE-AAC, m4a and even mp4 audio formats. I've played all of them on the audio player but just can't seem to play it through the mp3 player.

But the thing that surprised me was that, the bluetooth of GM200 is much better than the BT of others in the same price range. It has decent transfer speeds and is completely compatable with almost all BT phones. in addition, this phone also supports a handfull of BT profiles like A2DP, Serial port profiole and even FTP profile. With FTP profile, you can remotely access all the files from another device including the contents of memory card and you can just select the files you want and then simply get it via Bluetooth. It's kinda like the legal version of bluetooth hack.

Dan, 10 Nov 2009Nevin,can radio minimize when turn on now?n what about the sound rec. Still be amr,or upgrade too?The radio interface looks kinda the same and in the options menu, the first item is minimize instead of edit channel which comes as the second option. In minimized mode, you can do texting and even browse the net. the station name is dispalyed in the home screen in standby mode. I've also felt an increase in the radio reception because now I can listen to it without the earphones just like an ordinary FM radio. Sound recorder the same old amr format. Don't think they made any upgrade here.
