It has been revealed that consumers in the UK can expect to be able to purchase LG's Optimus Black smartphone sometime in March. The phone which was announced at CES alongside the Optimus 2X may not be as impressively spec'd as its dual-core brother but it does boast the brightest screen of any smartphone out there.
Details of which processor it will feature are vague but it is known that it will feature a rear-facing 5mp camera and 2mp webcam, HD video capture and a 1500mAh battery. The phone is notable for its slim design and is an impressive 6mm at its thinnest point. The 4" NOVA display is also a major selling point and is designed to be the brightest and most readable on any smartphone while using half the power of a conventional LCD screen. It will only be shipping with Android 2.2 installed but it shouldn't be long before an update to 2.3 is released.
Rather oddly as it bears the name 'Black' users will be able to purchase different coloured backs for the phone, with an alternative rear casing included in the box. LG has been quoted as saying that it has received complaints for making its phones look too masculine and similar, which is the reasoning behind the customisable casing.
Pricing and details of who will be carrying it in the UK has yet to be revealed. It is not known when the phone will be released in the US though it has recently been spotted passing through the FCC suggesting that it isn't far from being made available stateside. The filing shows it has been approved for the 850 and 1900 frequencies on GSM/EDGE as well as WCDMA 1900. Other territories will be getting the device as well as it is expected to launch globally in the first half of 2011.
LG has announced its new smartphone contender: the LG Optimus Black, running Android 2.2 and taking the ‘thinnest smartphone in the world’ crown from Apple.
The new phone will come with a 4-ionch NOVA display, which LG is claiming can offer superb performance in direct sunlight as well as allowing a ridiculously thin chassis, coming in at 9.2mm thick.
The new display is apparently 50% less power-draining than the OLED screens used on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S, which LG claims will help push smartphones past the standard one day capability of modern smartphones.
It’s also offering a 5MP camera with HD video camera and single LED flash, and still only weighs 109g, which feels almost toy-like in the hand with such a lightweight frame.
A new interface for U and I
A new UI is present as well, allowing users to directly access messages, emails and missed calls from the locked screen with a single finger tap.
The new ‘Gesture UI’ offers more new commands too, including lifting, shaking and tapping, for taking calls, entering camera mode, or listening to music.
The LG Optimus Black comes with a front-facing 2MP camera for video calling or self portraits, which outdoes the glut of VGA devices being unveiled on Android at the moment, such as the Google Nexus S.
While the Optimus Black lands running on Android 2.2, it will be upgradeable to Android 2.3, and may even get the tweak before its vague UK release date of first half of 2011.
It should also come pretty cheaply too, with rumours of a sub £30 a month price point making it a very viable alternative to the likes of the iPhone 4.
looks like so good that I cant see phones speaker though :) I'm concerned about battery life in LGs phones, anybody say lg does long-battery-life phones. It can stand half or 1 day mostly. Phone warns you as saying 'low battery'. When you look at phone for 2nd times, it has already closed. They cant stand even 1minute more. It makes you crazy.

What mean standard battery? Is it the same one you have to charge everyday?
I'm sorry to say this guys, i've used LG products and have concluded that they are nothing more than looks and cosmetics. Internally software and hardware is very weak and non-responsive in comparision to some of the industry pioneers such as Samsung, HTC, Apple and the list goes on. LG is also facing tough time in their mobile biz and they fired their ex-ceo Young Nam last year. They are in a pretty weak and desperate situation now. So choose wisely!
