MediaTek sets sights on US market, not worried about the chip shortage

MediaTek Android Misc 5G

Edit: a representative from MediaTek reached out offering the following statement regarding our story.

Like many other companies, MediaTek is working to manage ongoing supply constraints. It’s an industry wide issue and we are working closely with our foundry partners and customers to find solutions and adjust to current supply limitations until the supply chain catches up to demands.

Original story follows:

In a report by LightReading, Patrick Wilson VP of government relations for MediaTek USA answers a few questions about the general state of the smartphone industry, 5G, and there’s some talk about the global chip shortage. If you recall, MediaTek was crowned the number 1 chipmaker in smartphone market share in 2020, surpassing Qualcomm for the first time.

The Taiwanese chipmaker is not concerned about the chip shortage and it does not expect the shortage to affect MediaTek’s shipments of chips to phone makers nor does it expect 5G devices to feel the effects.

MediaTek sets sights on US market, not worried about the chip shortage

As per LightReading, the shortage does not involve the “kind of top-line, high-end smartphone chips that MediaTek produces for its customers.” Rather, the shortage affects “low-end chips and other electronic sensors that are used in gadgets ranging from automobiles to PCs.” This sudden demand is due to several factors including the US-China trade conflicts.

Global smartphone shipments have grown by 24% due to the “healthy demand of consumers with aging devices” as well as sudden demand for 5G as pushed by some markets, particularly in China where the 5G rollout was aggressive. MediaTek's Dimensity 5G chipsets proved to be worthy alternatives to Qualcomm's 5G chipsets.

The latest report claimed that MediaTek would be the first to produce a 4nm chipset (most high-end chips are currently made on the 5nm process) and the chipmaker is rumored to already have ordered from OEMs lined up, and production is expected to begin sometime before or after the end of 2021.

Update April 22: We got an official statement from MediaTek on the matter:

Like many other companies, MediaTek is working to manage ongoing supply constraints. It’s an industry wide issue and we are working closely with our foundry partners and customers to find solutions and adjust to current supply limitations until the supply chain catches up to demands.

Well, after seeing MediaTek got caught red handed about pushing the processor beyond safety limits when detecting there's a benchmark going on, I know for sure that I will never buy a phone with one of their processors. I'd rather pay a l...

You are comparring apples to oranges. China vs Taiwan Huawei vs Mediatek As for Mediatek, bring on the competition and the benefits it brings all of us. Innovations applied more quickly, prices lowered or kept in check, etc etc etc.

Better on what ? How do you compare it with anything if it's only made for Apple products and only apple OS ? I would say everything is better then apple chips as they can do everything these apple chips do with 3 plus times less money
