stardavinci, 13 Aug 20257+ years... still working fine. The Meizu 16th will forever be close to my heart for its analogue audio capabilities through inbuilt headphone jack. The last Meizu flagship with an audio jack. Period. A smartphone from a company which understood audio. Period.

Secondly, deep respect and open salute to Qualcomm for what they achieved when there was an ongoing onslaught from big names from audio industry - ESS, Cirrus Logic and AKM in mobile industry. These companies were suppling audiophile grade discrete DACs to mobile manufacturers like LG, Vivo, iQOO, Meizu, Xiaomi, Lenevo to name a few.

Qualcomm sat up, took notice and created a worthy opponent - Aqstic WCD9341 audio codec. The best discrete audio chip Qualcomm ever produced to counter ESS (LG QuadDAC) and Cirrus Logic in Vivo. If I remember correctly WCD9341 was announced with Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform. WCD9341 was later used with SD845, SD855 also. By then mobile manufacturers were eliminating audio jack and analogue audio from their flagships to promote TWS earbuds. Alas for us audio lovers, there never came a true successor of WCD9341.

WCD9341 was a high-tier discrete codec, which in combination with the Snapdragon 835/845/855, was engineered to make great audio experiences possible in a mobile phone. Truely, I believe it now after listening to my Meizu. As we know audio codec's are very sophisticated audio chip which has DAC for music playback as well as ADC, ANC, op-amps etc. I will concentrate on the DAC & op-amps part which are related to music playback as below:

1) WCD9341 like high end ESS, Cirrus Logic mobile DACs had the innate ability to play native DSD audio. With native DSD support means that no signal conversions to PCM are necessary, so my favourite DSD music can be enjoyed at the purest quality. This is something we must listen to believe. Sadly my Meizu 16th never implemented nativeDSD playback like my LGs & Vivo.

2) On the PCM side, the WCD9341 supported up to 384-kHz/32-bit audio even though 80% of the audio available is of 16-bit only.

3) Never heard before dynamic range of 123db in any mobile audio codec. These are lofty standards. Also, very low THD+N performance enabled this Aqstic codec to deliver pure, premium sound.

4) Two performance modes were available. Low performance audio playback with 6 mW of power only, while in high-performance, high-power audio playback mode required 34 mW of power. This is 6 times that of low performance mode.

Most mobile manufacturers on their flagships with Snapdragon 835/845/855 implemented the WCD9341 in low performance mode. Even LG did so with their flagship LG V30/V40 to promote their QuadDACs. While sonically believe me when I say, the WCD9341 in high performance mode was a worthy opponent of QuadDACs.

It was Meizu who I believe had the gut to implement and explore the true potential of WCD9341. They implemented it in high performance mode on their flagship Meizu 16th. And then tuned it to provide the amazingly lively Meizu sound signature. The combination of Snapdragon 845 SoC and WCD9341 (fed with 34 mW of raw power) every time gives me a glimpse of what Qualcomm had achieved in terms of sound quality and power output through headphone jack with this phenomenal audio chip.
Seven years have passed since then and still I get awed with Meizu’s sonic beauty and transparency. Hats off to Qualcomm and their WCD9341. Sonically I will rate Meizu 16th same level to that of my LG's with QuadDACs. In terms of power output, QuadDACs had more to run heavy high-impedance cans. But Meizu 16th have no issues with any of my high impedance IEMs, it can drive them to sufficiently high-volume levels with ease.

stardavinci, 13 Aug 20257+ years... still working fine.Same here. The Meizu 16th design aesthetics far surpass anything from other Chinese manufacturers even today. The other thing I like about this phone is its potent audio capabilities and presense of audio jack.

YourLocalPhoneCritic, 10 May 2024Those rounded white bezels are really beautiful! Whoever thought of them needs to get a raise.Unfortunately, in my country only the black one was available. Personally I am a big fan of Meizu flagship devices. Meizu 16th was the last flagship phone from them before they wrapped up in my country due to no sales. This phone is so different to regular Xiaomi, Oppo, Oneplus & Vivo phones. Meizu is so much focused on aesthetics, design, quality and performance, I love it for these reasons only.

Audio quality through headphone jack is stellar and so are the stereo speakers. Such a small, compact phone that nestles in your hand and is very powerful at the same time. The only con I can think is the battery size, which Meizu sacrificed for its compact nature.

Meizu 16th is most compact 6 inch (18:9) display phone you can find on planet earth and very slim as well. The phone fits into my palm like a glove and so light in weight at 152 grams. This all leads to a smaller battery size and yes it comes with a 3010 mAh typical battery capacity. it seems Meizu did not want to compromise on overall aesthetics of the phone and sacrificed battery capacity.

                              Below are the battery details:
Manufacturer: Jaide Energy Technology(Zhuhai) Co, Ltd.

                              Typical capacity: 3,010 mAh
                              Rated capacity: 2950 mAh
                              Voltage: 3.85 Vdc

Many are asking about bands supported by Meizu 16th (Meizu 16 in China). I have the Google certified global version with GMS & Playstore pre-installed. My unit is India specific, supports dual SIM with dual 4G VoLTE.

                                  Model: M882H
                                  Capacity: 8/128 GB

                                  Network:
                                  a) GSM: B2/ B3/ B5/ B8
                                  b) WCDMA: B1/ B2/ B4/ B5/ B8
                                  c) CDMA: BC0
                                  d) TD-LTE: B40

Lolmagooza, 15 Jul 2021Didn't even last two years, sad.My Meizu 16th is over 2 years old and works just fine. One of the finest piece of flagship grade engineering marvel at bargain basement price.

Even with a big 6 inch no-notch display, the phone is so compact and slim. The deign aesthetics surpass anything from other Chinese manufacturers. The other thing I like about this phone is its potent audio capabilities. It is the last Meizu flagship which arrived with an audio jack with great audio quality. The Qualcomm's best flagship audio processor Aqstic WCD9341 delivers here at full potential with Meizu's own signature audio tuning. Listening with quality headphones like SoundMagic E80C will make your jaw drop in terms of audio fidelity. It is right up there with LG's QuadDAC. The dual stereo speakers are great with dedicated Cirrus Logic CS35L41 mono audio amplifiers on each side.

The things I don't like about this phone is PWM flickering on the otherwise great Samsung AMOLED display. Causes eye strain on dimly lit conditions. The other one is only 3010 mAh battery by today's standards, as a minimum of 4000 mAh was required. But then the phone would not have been so compact and slim.
