Motorola Android Announcement

Today Motorola has officially taken the wraps off the Moto G Play (2024). This phone will become available in the US at Amazon, Best Buy, and Motorola's online store on February 8 for just $149.99. Subsequently, you'll also find it at Consumer Cellular, Verizon, Xfinity Mobile, Visible, Cricket, AT&T, UScellular, Cox Mobile, Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, Total by Verizon, and Simple Mobile.

In Canada, it arrives earlier, namely on January 26, at "select carriers and national retailers" but unfortunately Motorola hasn't announced a price for Canada, only saying it varies by carrier.

Okay, so let's see what the new Moto G Play (2024) brings to the table. It has a 6.5-inch HD+ IPS LCD touchscreen with 720x1,600 resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate, and Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 on top.

The phone is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 680 chipset, which doesn't support 5G. This is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. On the rear sits only one camera - a real rarity these days. It's a 50 MP snapper with a LED flash. For selfies, you get an 8 MP camera.

The Moto G Play (2024) has a 5,000 mAh battery with support for 15W wired charging. To get to that level of charging you'll need Motorola's TurboPower 20W charger or higher, which is not available in the box. The phone runs Android 13, unfortunately, and the company hasn't talked about updates at all.

On the bright(er) side, it has IP52 certification, which means it's dust protected - ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it won't enter in sufficient quantity to damage it - and it can withstand vertically dripping water across four positions. This is equivalent to 3 mm (0.12") of rainfall per minute.

If you have appropriate chargers it's perfect. In my case I try to get rid of all of my old smartphones and I sell them with their chargers. So I don't have plenty of chargers in my drawers.

Do we dare to hope that they have solved the problem with the phone eventually needing to be reset after charging as the battery weakens? I know it's futile to hope they fixed it eating SD cards in a matter of weeks if the card is left in, they ...
