Moto X Play lacks the RAM in long run.

The phone did ship with Lollipop 5.1 when released. Once the Marshmallow update was available, later manufactured units would ship with Marshmallow. Why would they load 5.1 and then ship when they have already developed a new ROM for this phone?
This is true to any OEM.

Try Chrooma keyboard, it does what you want (one hand operation, number bar at top). The permanent Search Bar is part of Android and has nothing to do with the phone manufacture. If you don't like it try another Launcher such as Nova.

I have two phones and I use X PLAY only for communicational purposes such as calling or texting, I barely ever open a web browser ,watch videos on YouTube and play games. Al tho I have to admit that I have disabled most of the apps that I don't use, so the battery endurance that I got from this phone is mostly because of that.
The battery endurance that I got from this phone is 170HRS which is more than a whole week and phone still has 5% left to go (NOT IN BATTERY SAVING MODE).
Of course you might think that you could probably achieve such endurance on any phone in pretty same OS configuration that I did. Well I have to disappoint you... partially. I carried similar test on my older XPERIA M5 which has 8x2.0 Processor, 3GB RAM, 5.0" 1080x1920 Screen and 2600mAh battery. The result was not even close to X PLAY. The phone battery died in a middle of a second day (STAMINA MODE WAS ACTIVATED). This could be and mostly is because of my phone's life and my usage of it before I took this test.

Alright. Now about the bad points of this phone.

                                      -Extra protection.
The curved edges on the sides of the phone and speakers prevents tempered glass from sticking on the whole screen. On the edges of the phone there are some lines of tempered glass that does not stick. I seem to experience the same problem on the speakers. But instead of tempered glass not sticking on the edge, it doesn't stick on the inside.
I have tried to apply some pressure, but it only stays stuck for a moment.
The alternative could be protective film, but it's not as protective and scratch resistant as tempered glass is.
                                      -Overheating.
Al tho I do not watch YouTube videos often, but I do. After some short time of watching YouTube videos phone starts to overheat.
Before Marshmallow update this was even more noticeable. I don't put a lot of hopes that Nougat update will completely deal with this issue, but it should reduce the problem as Marshmallow did. (We do know it's about business so don't expect magic, as most phones do show signs of overheating.)
Alternative option to prevent overheating could be using forked android versions A.K.A. Custom ROM's. I am not a huge fan of these, but I do have some experience. I do not recommend to use them as they might have bugs or could compromise your privacy. Overall custom ROM can really give your phone a fresh look, some amazing customization options such as setting the position of time on the status bar, over-clocking and many more. I'm sure that if you do decide to try one of them, you'll end up trying all of them. Exploration of feature rich android experience begins with the first bite of custom ROM. One thing you have to have in mind is that after installing a custom ROM your warranty will be void and there's a disclaimer on every single one of the custom ROM pre-download page stating that the developer of the custom ROM is not responsible for any software or hardware related damage, therefore you're on your own.
                                      -Size.
Size of the phone is too big to hold in one hand. Sadly google don't care about your handling of the device so much that they would make a One-Handed keyboard feature for the original keyboard.
There's a pretty handful selection of keyboards and each one of them has something to offer that others couldn't. Personally I like XPERIA keyboard as it's simple, has top row number option, one-handed keyboard (All I could ever want from a big screen phone). BUT IT CANNOT BE OBTAINED FROM STORE. If you want to have it in your phone you must search for it on the internet. I have tried to extract original-unmodified keyboard from custom ROM, and when I installed it. It simply didn't work. (I was lucky that it even passed the installation process.). Most of the xperia keyboards found online requires your phone to be ROOTED(Rooting your phone will void your warranty! Root is like getting administrator privileges on your Windows machine.) and some might even ask for a CUSTOM RECOVERY(Installing custom recovery voids your warranty. Custom recovery is custom recovery mode for your phone.) such as TWRP(Team Win Recovery Project) or ClockWorkMod Recovery to be installed correctly. But there are some that does not require root or custom recovery installed. But be aware that these keyboards are modified by someone so take extra precaution before installing them as there could be viruses such as key-loggers.
                                      -Search Barrrrrrrrrr...
I simply hate that I have no option to remove the search bar from my home screen. It's always there and it doesn't seem like this is going to change any time soon.

                                      Now. Advantages.

                                      -Really good camera.
Camera captures really highly detailed photos.
But not as highly detailed when capturing in low light environments.
                                      -Battery endurance.
                                      -Dual-Flash.
                                      It's amazing.
                                      -Sim&SD slot in 1.
There's a card holder that looks a lot like iPhone's ,but with one addition to it. It has an SD card holder on the other side of the same holder. This way you can hold your Sim&SD in the same slot. Sorry if it makes no sense. You'll get it if you buy it or have it.
                                      -Somewhat stock android experience.
There are Motorola apps here and there, but other than that, it's pure android.
                                      -Comfort.
The back cover of the phone is as nice to look at as holding the phone in your hands.
                                      -Wide variety of customization options.
There are a lot of back covers to choose from.

                                      That would be it.

Moto X style has metal frame, Quad hd display, 3GB RAM, thin bezel the same processor of blackberry priv and LG G4.

                                        I recommend Style than Play.
