AMSTERDAM, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Following are fourth-quarter 2004 sales of mobile phones in millions of units, as reported so far in corporate earnings releases.
Q4 2004 Q3 2004 Q4 2003 Motorola (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) 31.8 23.3 22.4 Samsung Electronics (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) 21.1 22.7 15.5 LG Electronics (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) 13.9 11.8 8.9 Sony Ericsson (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) (ERICb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research) 12.6 10.7 8.0
Motorola (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is No. 2 in global handset rankings, and Samsung is No. 3. LG Electronics is the world's No. 5 mobile phone maker and Sony Ericsson ranks No. 6. Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) and Siemens AG (SIEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) , the respective No. 1 and No. 4 will report their fourth-quarter results on Thursday.
Mobile phone makers Nokia (news - web sites) (NYSE: NOK - news) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT - news) regained market share in the fourth quarter, according to a survey by Strategy Analytics.
Worldwide handset sales reached 200 million for the quarter, and 684 million for all of 2004, the research firm said, a 32 percent increase over 2003.
But cell phone sales will grow at a slower rate in 2005, the firm predicts. It projects 7 percent unit growth for the coming year, to around 735 million phones. If the average price of a cell phone continues to decline, as it did in 2004, dollar volume could be flat.
Nokia's market share, which had slipped in recent quarters, recovered to 33.1 percent in the fourth quarter, compared to 30.7 percent in the previous period. Those gains were driven by price cuts, which led to lower operating profit margins at the Finnish phone maker's Mobile Phones division.
Motorola, which barely retained its No. 2 ranking in the third quarter, also gained market share, climbing to 15.9 percent, up from 13.9 percent, on the strength of a strong portfolio of new phones.
Samsung, which came in close behind Motorola with a 13.6 percent share in the third quarter, slipped to a 10.6 percent share in the fourth quarter, but was still slightly ahead of its 9.7 percent share in the year-ago period.
samsung kin g read this and stop bsing u ignorant.
Hmm... I got a feeling this 'big pimpa' has shrinked into a corner by coming in here to post under a different name or as an 'unknown' hmmm... Poor chap LOL
Hey =) just got my V3 yesterday and i was having problems with the software. The USB data cable doesn't detect the phone even if i downloaded the latest installer via liveupdate... can anyone help please?

Pls. don't bullshit....do your research before you write something here!
The truth is exactly the opposite of what you said, Mr. Pimpa!
I was waiting long for the phone to arrive, the press descriptions were talking of great stuff, and it fulfilled my biggest wish: a phone that is slim enough to fit into the pockets of my jeans and does not need a keypad lock that switches itself on/off every once in a while.
However, when it finally arrived I was not amused. The look and feel of the hardware is great, they have built selected materials into the thing, but the software handling is inferior to about everything that I came across in models of competitors on the market.
The software problems are not so much for the lowlevel stuff, network protocols, messaging input, media storage - it's the frontend stuff that is weird. The menu icons are hard to interpret on their own, the phonebook navigation sucks badly, some action subscreens miss a 'cancel' button, the paper user guide has not revealed answers to questions - if it's not obvious then it isn't there.
Especially the phonebook handling is the thing that surely makes it unusable for any traveller job. Contact-search only goes by the first letter, and it does not have a perso card to store multiple numbers and emails for one name. It only has a feature to "compress" the list view by name but better not try to rename an entry (it only renames one number!), pressing ok on a "compressed list" entry will show you exactly one number of that person (and no hint that you better scroll down to see extra items), you can not enter a postal adress, webpage or anything different than an number or email - not to speak of any other perso card details like birthdays that you want to record. Even my first motorola had a freetext field but this one does not have one - abusing the email field requires you to enter a "@" somewhere in the middle. WTF.
Anyway, when the v3 did hit the local stores back in last year, I did not buy it, much too expensive for the functionality it provides. But the price did drop as fast as a free fall being now less than 50% for a new one compared to the introductory price. I did now buy one, and it's good enough a phone in the price range of 300-400: for the feature of slimness I am willing to get away with these guys not testing their own products in a day job.
yeah samsung is really in the game these days that's why they lost market share to motorola in the fourth quarter, it looks like the d500 rocks but nobody wants it where as the v3 sucks and everybody is killing for it. and by the way if the v3 wasn't a great phone you stupid samsung fans won't spend hours trashign this phone thinking that ur making a difference. no matter what you say or no matter how good samsung phones are motorola beats samsung, just accept the truth and stop posting stupid comments.
I have had my V3 now for a week and have used extensively all its services which includes amongst others the numerous messaging platforms. I am so far quite happy with the phone. The build quality is good and feels solid but the weight and looks make this 'feel' like a delicate phone that will not do well under some pressure from the occassional drop. There is nothing more than the whats offered in the V620 but better classy looks and larger screen. The platform is Symbian which is tried and tested and has pretty much been 'perfected' over time. The camera is acceptable and the speaker works well. I have used in car with SE HCB30 bluetooth kit and works seemlessly. This is a decent phone. This is one phone I will not get tired of quickly and sell on ebay.
My V3 sucks except the look!
By the way, everyone can tell Aaron = BIG PIMPA.
what is wrong with you people, do u think a person whos willing to buy the V3 is willing to listen to ur crap and change his mind based on some stupid samsung fans. grow up people if you dont like the phone fine get over it and go advertise the d500 where it should be advertised. none of you had this phone and ur trashing this site is for people who used this phone and want to give their opinions. I though I could read a decent review here but it looks like this website is more liek a chat room, get a life people and stop wasting ur time
DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. It is absolutely shameful that there is only 5.5Mb of storage and it is, in my opinion, too expensive considering the features it has. The SAMSUNG D500 is a bit cheaper, but in fact its a better phone than this slimline piece of gay crap. The RAZR V3 is for those (VAIN, ANNOYING) people who enjoy continuously playing crap ringtones like the crazy frog on buses and get on everyones nerves. The samsung d500, in my opinion again, is far better and suits the more organised, mature individual. Trust me - I work for The Carphone Warehouse and I've actually had both of the phones, and I took the V3 back to the shop within a few hours, but i still got the d500!!
Do not buy this phone, they break at middle by the hinge. Worse still, they refuse to accept this as a design fault so you are not covered. Look elsewhere.
Who cares about this rubbish V3.....I will go for Samsung E720 for style & function.
did anyone hear of the BLACK RAZR V3?
motorola bosses showed it off on CNBC this morning. IT WILL BE GIVEN TO TOP CELEBRITYS FREE OF CHARGE AT AWARD CERIMONIES. yes, moto have given away free handsets. they have not confirmed yet weither it will be avaliable to consumers but have hinted that they will produce many different thin form factors with many different colours, they have confirmed a moto silver that will arrive later this year.
i personally would rather have my silver v3
