They had a great opportunity to dominate the smartphone business in 2005-2006 when they had the Windows Mobile OS on touchscreen phones under various brand names (look up Dopod) from a little company called HTC. What happened?
Microsoft leadership screwed up big time because nobody had the vision to see what it could have become.

However one thing in your comment absolutely is not true, that being that Apple's phones are more "high end" than any other manufacturer. Unless you're making the connection that High Cost = High End.
For the past few years, the iphone is just another low cost Chinese made phone, but marked up to a premium price due to the Apple brand name. There are phones from HTC, LG, Lenovo, Sony and even Blackberry that have better build quality, features and a more reliable (less buggy) OS.

User experience is everything. Having an s3 and a 5c (work phone) i can tell you straight up ios is a joke. The single button style is like when apple said there os was so powerful they only needed a 1 button mouse and now look. Get with the times. Having to use itunes is like living in the dark ages and an absolute joke the program makes me want to commit suicide its that bad. This is 2014 plug and plug into any comp at any time and copy & paste is mandatory for everything. You are so limited with ios and most of you don't even realize. There is nothing seamless about apple products in fact it is the complete opposite. Android sure has issues but overall they can be overlooked because of the options and ease of use it offers.

you didn't mention the locked bluetooth , the small internal memory , th3e huge difference in price just to get more memory , the battery weakness , problems with rigidity , Good Cameras which are LETTERLY SQUASHED By Android AND windows phone high ends

Clearly you are the one who doesnt understand, another typical paper specs boy :). Say one better phone in market which have better specs overall? Camera very top of the market with stunning 120fps slow motion, best lcd screen in the market, fastest gpu and fastest cpu in the market which runs everything perfectly smooth unlike anything else in the market, best fingerprint sensor, apple pay. What i missed here? :)

i cannot speak for windows, but the chart represents the growth of android users, and not necessary the decline of ios users, because every year, apple is selling more phones then the previous year.
android users getting too excited too quickly. IOS is just now growing as fast as android

As IOS is decreasing even in the USA and Android is up, this is possibly due to Apple recycling the same product, so after one trial they abandon the logo and go for the specs.

So if people switching from iOS, more coming in from another OS android share went down all of those countries.

this is logic, ios is getting too boring and many users are switching, wp has been in stagnation actually, no more lumias been launched except 730/830 but they didnt bring many exciting things, while android is full of newcoming hordes of all types and models. for the moment i am so much waiting for highend microsoft phone, so curious, what will it be like? will they bring slimmer phones with bigger batteries, superior specs and more features? or will they go down

We're still comparing OS platform market share?
How does it bother Apple that iOS market share declines, when they keep on selling more phones each year.
How does it help Samsung that Android is growing, when they just posted 74% decline in profits?
While illuminating in certain aspects, ultimately it doesn't do much in future smartphone prediction.
