Why would you make a deal with a company without knowing that it might not be capable? I dont think Apple as a company is that dumb to make deals "hoping" it will work out. The WSJ report might not be telling the whole story.

While I feel sorry for GT employees that the project fell through, as a consumer I appreciate that Apple has high manufacturing standards. Ultimately, GT was not able to deliver on its promises. Hopefully someday iPhones will have sapphire screens.

BC, 20 Nov 2014What about using Gorilla glass then!*umbased speculation ahead* the so called "ion harderned glass" on the new iphones might as well be a version of Corning Gorilla glass. Apple might have given Corning a good deal to let it call it "ion hardened". I say so cos I think Corning holds a patent on "chemical hardening" of glass..
Having seen Apple, it is likely they would not want to give the glass a different name than Gorilla..
              *end of speculation **

What does it matter? If you manage to scratch Gorilla Glass 3 you're either doing it deliberately or just very stupid.

BC, 20 Nov 2014What about using Gorilla glass then!*unbased speculation ahead* The Ion strengthened glass might actually be a Corning gorilla glass variant for all we know. Apple might have put up a deal with them to let them exclusively use it in their product

I remember when this story first broke everyone here was blaming Apple and it was only me pointing the finger at the GT CEO and one person agreed with me.
