to be honest to trully creat a glass interface that can take a knock is by implementation of a laminated glass panel. simply by creating a sheet od about .2mm bottom ad a leyer of about. 2mm or .3mm of TPU, PVB or EVA and on the top leayer they can place about .4mm of scratch resistant glass, then the estimated thickness less than .10mm then the glass panel will be ready to drop from about 3 meters and not even shatter because the added plastic between the glass sheets will hold any shrapnel in place and completely sheilding the user from accidental cuts or harm should the panel break. then they can start making claims that thier glass can take knocks and not shatter. ps repairing this kind of glass structure is easy as only glass silicone can fix the chips on the screen and reducing the cost of screen replacement. and using either TPU, PVB or EVA will also add flexibility to the panel in case exessive force is applied so the screen will addapt easily to pressure.
thats just my opinion on making glass displays tougher and safer.
Nah Gorilla Glass are only good in advertisements. Nothing is true. Trust me.
"Gorilla Glass 3 and the charts show that 0.4mm thick Gorilla Glass 4 is slightly tougher than a 0.7mm thick panel of the previous generation" - this only means that prevuls was complete shyte or that the noew one is unbrakable... obvioulsy first one is true
the lumia 1030 , lumia 940 and whatever next lumia will have this :)
no they still use these cheap materials making them look like indestructible, so you will shatter your phone and the go and buy a new one, thats way we have on the other side nokia phones, most of their phone were created to be great phones and also really durables.
the lumia 940 is comming with Gorilla Glass 4
I Will wait until they start making monkey glass coz gorilla glass aint tough enough for me. they should call it makak monkey glass then they have a sure customer in me.
thanks mates.
Lucky4, 20 Nov 2014Making the phone with saphire glass only increases the cost of the phone with a few dollars an... moreSapphire is harder but it may shatter more easily. Glass is harder than gold yet it shatters more easily than gold. Actually sapphire can scratch sapphire, so its not only diamond that can scratch it. Aluminium oxide should be able to scratch it too. I'm sure you've seen luxury watches with sapphire screen that has small scratches
Dovice, 20 Nov 2014As others have said, their previous glass was useless. Almost everyone has shattered their scr... moreThe constraint is the thickness. As you see....the protective glass on the display in this case is only 0.4 mm thick , as compared to probably an inch thick glass used for doors and windows.
Dovice, 20 Nov 2014As others have said, their previous glass was useless. Almost everyone has shattered their scr... moreBecause this is only 0.4 mm wide. Your window glass might be 2-3 cm wide. It also serves another purpose. And phone glass has to be flexible.
Unfortunately this won't even help because phone manufacturer logic is, "Oh we can make the display even thinner, wow 0.3 millimetres thinner is totally worth it rather than making it more durable...."
As others have said, their previous glass was useless. Almost everyone has shattered their screen, yet what gets me is that the toughened glass used for some building windows and doors is literally indestructible (and scratch proof), so why aren't the phone makers using that? Cost?
AnonD-8044, 20 Nov 2014Why don't they look to Nokias N-Series for what to use on a screen i.e. perspex..I never, ever ... moreI'm with you on that one. nowadays everything is a new technology with no longevity and strength
It's always the same thing, each version they say it's more indestructible, them you drop from a height of 30cm and shatters all over. At this point Gorilla Glass should be stronger than diamond according to their advertisement. Gorilla Glass is nothing more than a scratch resistant glass, there is nothing about "wooow almost indestructible almost as strong as adamantium" as they like to say.

Sorry, Sony doesn't use Corning Gorilla Glass 4. They are going to continue using the same glass that was used in Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3. I think they are using Dragontrail Glass.
Lucky4, 20 Nov 2014Making the phone with saphire glass only increases the cost of the phone with a few dollars an... moreyeah if you're ready to pay $1200-1500 for a 16GB version of a phone which uses (pure) sapphire glass, then the manufacturers don't have any problem doing it.
Really? Dragontrail Glass can drop from 5ft above and still survive from the impact.
