there were 2 kind of electronic buyer.
1. GEEK -- us... anyone that post in GSM arena could be fall into this. If you even geeker, then you must read slashdot or allaboutsymbian.com or symbian-freak.com.
2. Normal user that just happened need some electronic tools.
For #1, the most important factor in the device is the specs. This kind of guy would buy N9000 if it has intel i7 and the size of palm even the look of the device like a phone circa 2000.
For #2, the most important factor is the look, the cool factor. My sister are one of the person fall in this category. She choose iphone over any phone because it would make her look cool. I also have another friend that fall into this category. She thought that nokia 7610 were better than N70 (2-3 years ago) because 7610 looks better.

The competition in cellular industry is becoming more fierce. The good device alone is not able to win many customer. The device need to be great and also pretty. This is the device that will win more customer. And iphone is just one of the product that show this. It's device is NOT the best, but it devine beauty/luxury. That's why iphone sell a lot.

In fact, my sister using the iphone. The truth is, when I talk to my sister about phone functionality, she just don't care. What she care is she looks great with the iphone. It's match her bag/shoe/clothing. That's why I called her a fashionably geek. And I'm NOT bashing iphone here. I wanna say that Apple did a great job of making their iphone associated with a Luxury item.
We do have 3G not only because of Nokia, but Nokia along with Siemens, Erricson and others were the core member of GSM group. It's the group that making the spec decision for 2G (GSM), and 3G (WCDMA) and it's located in Europe. Apple just happened in the place where the other group is bigger. The CDMA group of Qualcom (American side). And this is why Apple is lagging behind the 3G implementation. Because in United State WCDMA/3G is lagging behind in other part of the world.

I was too disappointed that Nokia not try their best with N97. But now, I consider myself as lucky. I was about to snap N97 when they launched, but because Nokia decide to put the ARM 11 434MHz, I think I'm gonna get the E72 with 600MHz and twice the ram instead. Alas, the E72 didn't come out until they announce this N900. So, I'm lucky enough that Nokia were launching N97 not with the best CPU, and I'm lucky that E72 taking forever too be available on market. :).
Now, on term of the display.
Capacitive vs. restrictive.
This is not about which one is the best. This is about taste, etc.
Apple love fashionable tools. There is nothing wrong about that. They love to show that they can do so much on their OS with finger. And UNFORTUNATELY, they patent some of it. So Nokia and other company can't easily use that.
Now, Nokia because they would have limitation if they use capacitive, they try to maximize on the other technology. And it's not a bad choice either, because with stylus/nail, we can be more precise rather than using finger. This is just a matter of choice.
And I don't think this could be say a drawback for any device. It's just like when you choice between a petrol car and a diesel car. You can't say that either is using the wrong technology. It just happened to be different technology.

as one ex-apple fanboy I have something to say... DON'T pay attention to comments on iPhone users... apple is just another religion, and talk against them is heresy. The true is that the iPhone is a good product, not the best, but yes... is a good product... NOT the firth making all it makes... but yes... is a good product.
Nokia has more tech than apple when you talk about phones... we have 3G because of Nokia!!!!!! and many more things... Nokia is the biggest phone creators and they sell more toys than any other company on earth (if you have 50 bucks in your hands you can't buy a iPhone, but can get a nokia...)
The N900 is clear better than the iPhone, I have a N800 and I can tell you that without make calls is better than the iPhone!!!!!!!!!! the N900 is a computer, a REAL computer... now they put a phone on it... WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT?!!!!
I was about to buy a N97... now I'll wait.

The apple DID set some trend. ... moreYou are right cause if any other company had come out with the fruit phone device in their line up everyone would be laughing not having copy/paste , mms etc it would be ripped to bits by every critic..It is cult followers who are lapping it up but it still seems mags and forums praise it to high heaven ..I had to laugh at a full advert dedicated to showing/eplaining tha fruit fone had copy/paste ,,only apple could get away with advert like that any other company would have been ridiculed for life..That said i would like to have a week with 3gs to see how good it is..Its not that i hate it i am sick of hearing about and everything being compared to it constantly,,..
Back on topic i am still not convinced by touchscreen fones and to me its a fad,,i will still wish clamshells would come back in fashion..Somewhere it mentions it being a communicator replacement but it cant cause all that range are clamshell designs..The N900 will run more like a desktop than windows mobile itself which puts all other o/s to shame as well but i am jumping ahead now until its out and tested ..Still dont know what to get next but htc pro which i am using now is good but awkward altho its the best sound ive heard from a mobile ever...

There is nothing wrong with that, and I think apple have a good strategy establishing their brand image like this.
Unfortunately, when this fashionably geek sees other product from other company THAT really BEAT their fashion tools, they will make some excuse to make their judgment looks right.
This is what happened here. And this is a barometer of N900 success. Lot's of that iphone geek feel uncomfortable seeing that they might soon face with a choice... fashion (iphone) or power (N900).
Actually, there's nothing to worry here. Everyone have their own taste. You can be on the side of geek and fashion, or geek and power device. You just have to choose.

Looking frm marketing point of view, iphone band image is much much higher than each N series. iphone no need to hv similar features like top N series to maintain it's position. They jst need to keep progressing but a bit lag behind others(in terms of features)will not be a problem. Jst like many mac users, who take pride of using the image. If you want more features, take N900. If you want the image take iphone. Then, why don't you take both to get all the top goodies! Well, money matter!

What's going on with the stylus. Mobile-review clearly said there's a stylus built into the casing and I saw it in the photos too. But N900 website didn't mention any thing abt stylus(under input method) and in included accessories. But in the applications, they said there's sketch application. GSM Arena, can you make it clear? Cos I really want a stylus on this device to make quick hand-writing memos.
