They are just exposing the light sensor on the front. I am not sure why they made the cutout on Htc One M8 for the selfie camera. You can't use the camera when its off with the flap down.

the circle shape is better, but i dont care, if HTC manages to fit a bigger screen in a same size phone then i am getting it...because the M8 style is just perfect...

The render of the front clearly says "mockup v2".
However I really do hope this is what it will look like. Much nicer with a single glass front than those stuck on metal parts like on the M7.

The cut out is for the light sensor so it doesn't think it has a case on that lets it turn the display on.
Also as we know so much about the (M9) why not update the product page?
