"However, a big part of Qualcomm's profit in China came from its patent licensing arm collecting royalties."
so i'd guess somehwere between $3 to $4 billion per year
AnonD-335710, 10 Feb 2015So you want a Company that doesn't share sources be on top of the SoC makers for Android which... moreMediatek is only one example and you miss the point, no company should be on top as that is the worst case scenario for the consumer. Besides, without competition, Qualcomm would not be compelled to do anything open source. If they knew consumers had no choice, why would they reduce their margins by doing extra work?
Mediatek already said it in the past that it's hard to release kernel sources as they fear the leaking of information about the architecture of their chips. I also have custom ROMed mtk devices and I feel that there is no need anymore to get the kernel sources as the chips are getting more powerful and more battery efficient. If mtk will release kernel sources it will be good too.
i think its bad for qualcomm,..they do the research and make ideas but others will benefit from it, its like buying your dream car and letting others to use it

That's good for other small chip manufacturers...!
Qualcomm chips are not that good as people say...i would still prefer Exynos over Snapdragon any day...!
Exynos , Nvidea & Intel have better chips than Qualcomm , even mediatek is good , its not bad as people say , they just need to release kernel code for developers...!

Desktop stagnated because of her monopoly.
Qualcomm tries to do the same with ARM, but heroic Mediatek is stopping her. Viva Mediatek!
vvvvv, 09 Feb 2015mediatek havent release kernel source. what a shameNot saying they are ideal but if mediatek are seeing a financial benefit of doing so then other companies will do so too. If Qualcomm didn't have any competition they would stop doing anything that didn't result in direct profits.
No private corp is ideal but at least competition gives us choice which doesn't exist in the x86 market (you can't make desktop or server processors unless Intel allows you to)

This is why I prefer mediatek and other SoCs. We have seen what happens when a US company strong arms everyone with anti competitive practices. What's even worse is that the most popular OSs are written by those spying American s as well.
Don't forget how slowly the market moved because of Wintel. The mobile market will stagnate just as bad if everyone blindly buys Qualcomm devices exclusively
B1lt, 09 Feb 2015wow insane money :(( really bad for Qualcomm“The record fine won't influence the company's financials that much, since around half of its $26.5 billion global revenue was earned in China for its latest fiscal year.”
So, how bad could it be?
That's pretty much fair. US Government ruined Huawei's business in US in favor of local manufacturers.
where does this fine go
Haha, good riddance!
wow insane money :(( really bad for Qualcomm
