Other company logic: Hey we have this new technology let's make this exclusive then resell to other companies soon.
Apple logic: Hey I heard about an idea of waterproofing phones by coating them with a chemical, let's do this too... Let's just change the compound used and patent this and declare it new technology exclusive for iphones.
Anonymous, 08 Mar 2015Actually they get declined repeatedly and keep re applying for the same patent Yeah, this is the stupidest patent and a sign of why Apple is such a corporate bully and what's wrong with the whole U.S. Patent system.
The idea of coating the internal electronics of a device to patent them has been around and used for a long time. Coming up with some slightly different way to do the same thing is neither an original nor "non-obvious" concept, as required by patent law in the U.S.
Apple just throws as many things at the patent wall as possible, hopes some things will stick, and then it has more ammunition to intimadate its competitors.
Sure, everyone else does it too. But Apple is king of the hill of patent obnoxiousness.
And heck, there are countires without patent systems. Studies show they have no less innovation. What's more, even in countries with patent systems like the U.S., most real innovation happens outside the patent system (also demonstrated by people who have studied the issue).
The U.S. patent system has not served its purpose for decades, perhaps ever. It is just used to create monopolies and stiffle competition. Which means less innovation and higher cost products.
AnonD-372802, 09 Mar 2015again apple, you can't patent something that has already been done by another company! Rread before comment, can you?
again apple, you can't patent something that has already been done by another company!
I much prefer this approach to waterproofing, with all the Xperias that gotten destroyed due to loose flaps and the Galaxy S5 problem with backcover falling off when dropped in water. My own Xperia Z was waterproof for about 2 months, then i got the same problem as most other Z owners, the back panel came lose in the corner where the camera and chipset is located and it had to be kept far away from water.
This is water resistance done right, creds to Moto and Apple.
AdamBoy64, 09 Mar 2015Yeah, I agree. No phone is ever going to be waterproof, nor does a phone need to be. If yo... moreLol, really? Where do you live, at the Mariana, or the Philippine trench? You better check the average depth of the worlds oceans near where people live. I know of people who recovered phones from the ocean, oceans arent nearly as deep as you think. Maybe you live in Tibet and never even seen the ocean.
AdamBoy64, 09 Mar 2015Yeah, I agree.
No phone is ever going to be waterproof, nor does a phone need to be.
If yo... moreWaterproofing is a good gimmick. I have a Z1 and has saved to die like 3 times... You don't need an ocean, you just need cold drinks and an icebox...
Also when it rains, being one of the few that can do a phone call (maybe urgent) without wasting time finding shelter it a cool thing too! Looks like a McGiver type thing.. Lol!
I've heard from other people that some incident happening quite often is people droping phones to wc's, pools, ocean, lake, whatever with water...
So its good to have

No phone is ever going to be waterproof, nor does a phone need to be.
If you drop it and it sinks to the bottom of the ocean, it's not like you're going to go retrieve it anyway.
AdamBoy64, 09 Mar 2015I'd say so.
Not sure anyone will ever make a fully waterproof phone.what's the point with the waterproof and water resistant? You dont live in the atlantis, don't you?
in the IP 67 certification, the number '7' represent device test in the water as depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. IP 68 even say it's a continuous immmersion for more than 1 meter, maybe below 3 meters.
Btw, Sony has gone to IP68. So it's possible to make waterproof phone, for some specific time and depth.
Anonymous, 08 Mar 2015itll be just water resistantI'd say so.
Not sure anyone will ever make a fully waterproof phone.

Apple's success in not being called out for copyright infringements comes from 1) having the corrupt US Patent Office backing them and 2) aiming at the average American consumer and when I say the average American, I really do say the average, non-knowledgable, gullible, not so smart but very loud and opinionated Joe.
