I have upgraded to Lollipop. now not possible to select 3G only. This option was not there in KitKat but can be managed by installing an App 'Phone testing'. But this app is not working in Lollipop.
How to activate 3G only in Lollipop? (not 3g preferred)

Fixed issue by removing sim, powering up phone with no sim message, then inserting sim.
Fixed.

Using a UK Moto G 2013 (1st Gen), I had the same issue of not being able to place calls or access mobile data. I followed the advice on this thread (Select 2G as preferred network, turn off and turn back on, then go back to the menu and select 3G as preferred network, turn off and back on) and I can now place calls and access data. I received a lengthy reply from Motorola customer service advising a full factory reset (!!!) but avoided that and this seems to have done the trick. Anyone facing these same issues should try it first.
To put phone in full silent mode: you have to click either of the volume buttons(up or down) & then click 'none' & 'indefinitely'. To put phone in normal mode again, click 'all'.
How do u uninstall this update. Ssoooo not happy with the silent mode being removed grrrr
