An unlocked cell-phone, in British is called usual SIM-free. On the North American continent, the popular term is carrier free.

sHAdStoNEd, 19 Mar 2015Powerful little phone - I like this a lot... wonder if it would work in North America?
Depends what you are thinking saying "will work into the USA". If you're thinking about just talking (2G), we have only 4 GSM frequencies: 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. All modern cell phones are quad mode, so you'll be able to talk anywhere you'll have GSM signal.
If you're thinking about data communication (3G, 3.5G, 4G or LTE) including VOIP, this could be a major problem. The Japanese data communication frequencies are way different than the American ones. Even more, in USA each provider has different data frequencies/bands (I'm referring to all 4 major carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-mobile and Verizon.

BRad666, 19 Mar 2015its what you called CDMA device, phone without a sim card basically its a program phoneI'm so sorry, I have to disagree with you. These days, CDMA cell phones (i.e. Verizon, Sprint) they were equipped with SIM cards too, needed for international roaming and for 4G/LTE reasons. This cells are not SIM-free, they have the GSM services locked to a certain international carrier. Example: Verizon's cells are locked to Vodafone.
Name made me laugh... Samsung released z1 with name of a Sony flagship and now Sony gets j1, name of a low end phone from Samsung... Hahah...
The phone is costly... Z1 compact is better deal...
Why that champaigne color? And the edges should be more flat not round to get a better grip while you take a picture. Like on Xperia U.
