Samsung asked the Japanese carrier Docomo to sell their phones unbranded to try to increase their market share. People don't buy Samsung phones in Japan. Do they know something we don't or vice versa?

However this jimmy kimmel stunt portrays one well known fact, that there are a large group of people who will trust any fruit product no matter what, what is better known as blind trust. That is what brand equity or brand value is all about.
Now when this is extrapolated to a very large scale with monopolistic practices, then it is upto you to judge whether this is a good thing or not.
On a lighter note, what is this "opposite version" you are talking about, A fruit product with a casio label!!! Thats just... absurd, what else can I say. btw if you happen to see mkbhd's first impressions of the said product, there's a very interesting observation he makes... If this itime or i whatever would have been showcased by a "well known korean" brand, then they would simply have been laughed off the stage, Just because it has the fruit logo, it can pull this stunt off.

DROPPNG samsung in japan market and replace with jap carrier DCOMO ok for jap market -DCOMO is jap most popular carrier - but internationaly samsung should retain under patent GALAXY logo .. and mot importantly -- fewer best specs best prices new models .. btw- 5inch galaxy s4 fits my top jacket pocket perfectly -- keep that way ..LESSER samsung own bloatwares please ..

As you say the fruit company doesn't spell its name on its product, that's because the fruit fans will consume anything with a fruit logo on its back. Here is an interesting example from a long time back. It shows how fruit fans go on praising how innovative and outstanding a $20 casio watch is ( just because it has a fruit sticker on its back ) and it becomes the itime or iwhatever something from a far away galaxy!!

Without logo looks are more premium. Just to buy in Japan :) .
Edge being so different I wouldn't be afraid of some copycats.
