If I were to guess, they will jumpstart their entry back into the phone business by acquiring Jolla.

    Why? Several reasons.

Nokia has very few employees left that have the expertise to build the OS and hardware; recall that 25,000 employess went to Microsoft from Nokia with the phone division.

Also recall that Jolla is mostly former Nokia employees. And for those asking for a Meego type OS, well, you would have the Sailfish OS, that although it isn't Meego, it's more Meego than Android or WP.

Also, Jolla headquarters is in Helsinki with an R&R facility also in Finland and another in Hong Kong. This is material because there would be very little additional costs associated with logistics and integration. The Hong Kong R&D facility would fit nicely into having manufacturing in China or Taiwan, if that's the direction Nokia wanted to go.

This would work nicely for Jolla's (former Nokia) employees because they could get those things they couldn't get when they were part of Nokia (and it will probably make most of the employees quite wealthy).

One final thought, if Nokia gets back into the phone business they won't sell the maps product. The maps product is very good and would be a good addition to the Sailfish OS.

What talent they had almost exclusively went to Jolla (although some employees went to Apple as well). The ones who stayed? Dead weight waiting for their pensions. What Microsoft got out of the deal were designs, supply chain access, patent access, and name recognition (which they subsequently ruined). Nokia in the mobile space will have to build this up again (or acquire Jolla who has a 3 year head-start).

Last i heard nokia has an agreement with Microsoft only till 2016 end
After that it'll be free from the shackles of Microsoft

        Imagine then nokia hardware+cyanogenmod
        I think it'll be a winner
Plus Nokia still has a huge fanbase who are still loyal to nokia, though it is out of the market, and waiting for it's comeback (i myself being one of those fans)

They might convince TCL to rebrand some low end Alcatel branded firefox and android smartphones into Nokia.

I really hope they use or develop a new OS something like MeeGO /Symbian since Android will not have a use for them since there almost 18000 phones around using the same OS over and over....they dont deserve be one more of the bunch

WoohooNokia phones will be made by the Chinese manufacturers regardless. It will no longer be the Made by Nokia like in the past. Who knows it may be a Xiaomi phone with Nokia branding over it?

They had their chance to jump on the Android bandwagon and soar on Google's wings early on but they instead chose to jump in bed with and sink in the Microsoft quicksand. Now they're inextricably stuck in a quagmire.
