So Apple has licences with Ericsson, maybe they covers Nokia's allegations.
They are also a computer company and have done a lot of work on audio codecs, data transmission etc.
Their new Airport offers 450Mbs data transfers, the fastest commercaily available wireless router, data transmission using OSX which is probably what they use in the iPhone without touching Nokia's patents.
This court case just proves that all Nokia's talk about openess and open platforms is just a marketing ploy to get developers to do their work for free.
They are even using Apple's WebKit in their S60 browser, WebKit released as open source by Apple without patents.

Apple faces the possibility of having to pay Nokia up to $1 billion for the technologies used in iPhones sold so far if it loses a lawsuit brought by Nokia, analysts said.
The world's top cellphone maker Nokia filed the suit in the United States on Thursday, saying Apple had infringed 10 patents in technologies like wireless data transfer, a key factor in the success of iPhone, and accusing Apple of trying to hitch a "free ride" on Nokia's technology investment.
Apple, a latecomer to the cellphone industry, has won 15 percent share of the smartphone market, but it has limited intellectual property assets compared with rivals, when all vendors work under cross-licensing agreements.
Neil Mawston at Strategy Analytics said Apple could have to pay Nokia anything between $200 million and $1 billion for patents used in 34 million iPhones shipped so far.
In the last quarter alone Apple sold 7.4 million iPhones for an average sales price of $566, according to Strategy Analytics.
The analysts said Nokia has a case to claim such sums as it is one of the key patent holders in mobile technologies, alongside Qualcomm and Ericsson.
"It is almost inconceivable that someone can produce a mobile phone without using Nokia patented technologies," said Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight.
An Ericsson spokesman said on Friday the company has a licensing deal with Apple.
Nokia said in its court filing it had made several price offers to Apple on per patent and on portfolio basis, but the U.S. firm had declined those.

can win easily
some anwers to some of the questions
nokia did have negotiated wiu apple about this issues, but arrogant apple refuse to pay nokia for the use of this tech! So nokia decided to sue them!
Nokia can make money on every iPhone sold if they win thos lawsuit ( sure they can win)
and penalty money from apple for refusing to pay!
Of course gain Good reputation
Guys, here's some enlightment for you, and stop accusing Nokia's poor, don't have money, jealous, etc which are pathetic and lame.
If Nokia end up not winning this case, they will end up ableto use apple patented techs such as multitouch, etc. Get the point..? Smart move from the giant.. LOL.
Some analysts, like Maynard Um of UBS, see Nokia’s action as a preemptory move against a possible infringement suit from Apple aimed at Nokia’s own multitouch handsets.
“We believe Nokia’s suit could be a pre-emptive move ahead of its new handsets launching soon that may have multi-touch capabilities for which Apple has IP,” Um wrote in a note to clients this morning. “We would not be surprised if Apple eventually files an infringement suit if Nokia’s handsets are deemed to infringe its IP and we believe Nokia would prefer any court action to be combined as prior cases have been. We expect the legal process to be drawn out & could involve US Patent Office reviews.”
The endgame here? Most likely an out-of-court settlement and cross-licensing agreements–assuming Apple’s willing. After all, Nokia is on record admitting its fondness for Apple’s technology.
Asked once about the striking similarities between a touchscreen device it was designing and Apple’s iconic handset, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s head of multimedia devices replied, “If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.”
Nokia is a brandmark that is fabricating mobile phones since 90' and apple just appeared on the market few years ago. U just cant compare NOkia, that is manufacturing a large range of mobile phones, from basics to smartphones, with Apple that has only 3 phones in the range that are almoust the same. Soo, it is rational to belive that Nokia has moore technology then Apple. By the other hand Apple is a big company that could use the technology from computers and incorporate it in a phone. I do belive that Nokia is better then Apple.
Anonymous, 24 Oct 2009Nope. The simple fact is, nokia is running low on cash. Nokia is also running out of worthy ... more1) Nokia is not poor. It is the largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world. 2) Nokia reports higher revenue than Apple. 3) The world of phones doesn't start and end with smartphones. 4) The world is not just 270 million people.
Nokia is suing because Apple used its patents without paying and they're saying everyone else is paying. Nokia is also suing because that's how the US market deals with competition. Also because Apple is an arrogant, overpricing its products, while not offering best in class hardware, and suffer form an inferiority complex when it comes to the concept of propriety.
Jokes aside, really, no one even know what patent is in question, and what everyone else actually signed with Nokia.
Hackside you know no, 23 Oct 2009Hackside, that's basically the most ignorant comment to any entrepreneur or engineer out there... moreand know you will tell me how is really the business world with your little research? no
Nokia will get nothing, apple will come up with something to avoid claims or probably similar patents, which had happened with HK and their G36 rifles. Both companies will waste money and get the same, nokia losing money and apple selling more and more.
Jeez, calm the **** down
I'm no phone expert, so I really can't say anything regarding most phones (I've never heard of this Nokia company before.) But, if they have the balls to directly attack Apple, they are now one of my favorite companies. :D

Nokia is also running out of worthy devices, lol. And just like what you said, nokia is getting really old :) Out of their desperation, since they're not making money, they hope to make easy money by suing Apple. But of course nokia will lose this lawsuit and will even add insult to their already injured state, lol. Nokia is getting really old and outdated. Time for younger Apple to take over :)
Anonymous, 23 Oct 2009Nokia says that all iphones use its patented technologies. iphones have been around for a few ... moreI agree with you. Nokia is losing their hold on the high end devices. That shows on their significant sales decline. So now they're resorting to other means of getting money from companies that are doing really well. Apple knows their stuff as well. I don't think Apple will risk their business just so they can avoid paying some fees. I'm sure Apple will clear this non sense very soon.
Nokia should go back to pulping forests for paper.

Do you know anything about the business world? Why do you think they make patents, do you think people make them for fun?
Please get out of your little bubble and learn a few things about the corporate world before making your conclusion that makes it okay for any company to copy an idea and present it as your own without heavily investing into research.
Apple will pay the penalty to Nokia. And then they sell iphone with $30 additional price.
