Year over year, most firms are showing Samsung losing at least 5-6 percentage points of market share. YoY is a better indicator because it captures the same timeframe as the current quarter you are trying to compare.

Not to mention that, besides Samsung and LG, every single manufacturer on the list has lost market share when compared to a year ago. Samsung gained 4.3% market share, while LG is up 0.3%. Even with 61.6 million units sold, Apple is down 2.2% market share.

Sony is rightly out of the list. However, case of Microsoft is surprising and unfortunate. They are offering a totally different mobile platform which although may not be mature enough as yet, but offers an overall good mobile experience. Windows is better than android in some aspects especially in the low segment. But its unfortunate that its finding it hard to position itself in an android-saturated market.

Sony is unnderrated, their smartphones are amazing. Being shadowed by Shitsung and Crapple because they own the Market. Will buy Sony forever, even if they make garbage. Just like Samsung/Apple fans

Actually, in december 2012 Sony was 3rd in the mobile sales for that quarter and LG wasn't even in top-5 and so were other chinese brands... If they had maintained it, they would've been very good by now... Instead, they didn't learn anything from their mistakes and let others pass them... They've all resources in their hands, still they're failing... They should learn from LG... They've to step out of their ego and make a Nexus device which will help them a lot... Hope they will come back in the game...!!!

Microsoft can't compete with Samsung. Nokia was best for windows devices. Windows phones were rising only the brand name of Nokia. Samsung is not a hit, coz they came with their Omnia series which was flop. The fact is android is hit. So Samsung is really making some money with android. That's why Microsoft can't catch the smartphone market. Both Microsoft is doing the same mistake as BlackBerry did, underestimating androids flexibly. Sony devices are a bit expensive with less features.

Sony and Microsoft are not on the list because they haven's released anything significant for 2015, but they will in due time. Also this is a top vendors list hence is a reflection of shipments not sales.
