I sell phones for a living.
In my case, I got the 3G on an 18 month contract with O2, sold it and bought the 3GS when it came out. my contract finishes mid January. Ill be upgrading to the next gen iPhone next summer.
Nokia cant touch the figures:

What people want is not iPhones but rather a device with a big apple logo on its back to show off, the bigger the better. For the love of God, I cant understand why people buy a locked system phone with absolutely no right to do whatever they want with it jailbrake or even use it on other networks through out the world lol, after all they paid for it and are still paying! The iPhone is a hardware outdated in every single area and truly Apple controlled device with no say of how to be used by its "owners". And don't even get me started on the App Store.

You're not being bullied into buying an iPhone. Vodafone UK will still stock maybe 50 other handsets.
But Vodafone UK have to look after and look out for themselves. Their past financial year was far from great and market share has been slipping away month after month in the UK.
They're looking to make up some ground, quick & fast. The HD2 may be perfect for you, yes. But it isn't the big money maker that Vodafone UK want. It's appeal is currently limited to us people (geeks) here on mobile phone websites.
HD2, £40 a month on a 24 month contract. Free handset (£500 value).
or
iPhone 3GS 32Gb, £40 a month on a 24 month contract. £149 upfront cost. Proven for the last 6 months that people buy this no questions asked. You can see why the emphasis is on the iPhone.

That's Nokia's trick overload stores with 20 models so there's no display space left.
Networks are businesses they follow the money.

Vodafone has had the iPhone in multiple countries for a few years.
WinMo phones only sell to geeks who only care about specs sheets, a very small segment of the market. Apple proved that the most important thing is usability which is why so many people want iPhone's.
Anyone can pick up an iPhone and start using it without bothering with manuals or complicated set ups.

Are Apple being anti-competitive and forcing networks to drop the HD2 ? First Orange and now Vodafone. HTC could sue them for millions.
The real issue is why not offer both phones at the same time? I'm not disputing that the iPhone is good for some users. For me and many others it isn't. But I see no reason to be bullied into one handset over the other. Especially a handset I will be forced to jailbreak.
If iphone 4G came with 4" high-res screen and better battery management then I will consider it. Until then I don't want Vodafone to bully me into getting a handset I never wanted in the first place. Especially when they are looking to gouge users for £45. There is no ideal handset and neither is perfect.
The HD2 was very popular with 20,000 handsets leaving vodafone within a few hours of arrival so why not offer both?
Vodafone might get limited users who are stepping onto the iphone platform for the first time - but they must overcome Tesco, Orange, and O2.
People who wanted iphones went to O2 years ago and are unlikely to go back to Vodafone unless they are irritated by slow O2 network speeds then perhaps they can now switch back to Vodafone. But only after their 24month contracts are over.
Vodafone already missed the boat. Forcing one handset which everyone else has, is not going to save them. Then there are issues over the spectrum the network is on.
If they sold HD2, users who want HD2 will get it. If they sell iphone, users who want the iphone, will get the iphone. If they force users to buy the iphone instead of the HD2 it is unlikely those users will get the iphone. That's my only issue.

Someone, 23 Dec 2009Whether it's 90% blind buys or whatever buys - the iPhone is a retail success worldwide! This ... moreThe iphone is not the only phone in the world people have to wake up and realize that times change and apple is obviously loosing ground plus not much people care about apple's iphone in the eastern side it's only here in the west,Canada and USA were it sells like hotcakes since it's subsidized so people can buy it
But in the long run
Subsidized phones + 2 - 3 year term and the so called special iphone plans = waste of money plus useless accessories
Just because it something sells alot means it's good it just means it was marketed well nothing else
Xbox = iphone
Ps3 = n900

Again, space bum, you are making things up.
Since O2's exclusive deal expired Orange and even Tesco have released iphones. Vodafone despite advertising the release months ago has, as per usual, taken months to develop test and install their own software. Any hopes of more competitive deals are also in vain. By the time Vodafone actually start delivering these handsets (on 18/24 months deals) we will only be 6 months away from the new iphone release which will make the 3G and 3GS all but obsolete. Don't be fooled into Vodafone's tardy and expensive offering.

As an operator, you LOSE customers by NOT selling the iPhone, which is what has been happening to Vodafone UK for two years. Vodafone UK's directors and shareholders must have been angry to lose the number one UK network position.
Vodafone UK has to do what it can to make money and get new customers, that for now lies with the iPhone.
Now as good as the HD2 is - it does not have the same current mass-market appeal(or is it the customer driver) as the iPhone. Focussing your business on the HD2 will not make you as successful as focussing your business on the iPhone. And as I said, that is what is MOST important to Vodafone UK.
