a 2 inch screened device, without touchfunctionality and with a numerical keyboard, that runs a smartphone OS, is also a smartphone, if the maker wishes to call it that.
A 8 inch tablet with calling capabilities, if called a smartphone by the maker, is a smartphone. Although many would perhaps not agree and say they rather call it a tablet first, they can't actually say that it's not a smartphone.
If somone makes a watch, with a smartphone OS and callng capabilities and calls it a smarthone, well then again that would be a smartphone.
If however a product is made today, that runs a smartphone os, but that only supports VoIP calling, you could argue that, that is not a smartphone, no matter the display size or dimension, or other physical attributes. But that could change, in the future, perhaps all calls will be VoIP in the future, so that could be a step in the evolution, and thus in reality that in fact would also be a smartphone.

I see, the main argument here is that sony released a smartphone with a 4k screen that is just a waste, but let me remind you, they have also released a FullHD version. Will you people be getting that phone instead?

4k screen, what a complete waist of time and money iplementing, when the pixels are too small for your eye to even see, and the biggest annoyance is that they scale the crap of the screen, so you get zero usable space over the 720p screens for the majority android usage. I wish they just sort out 1080p so the scale gives you extra room for icons, widgets etc on the screen space by default because even if an 8k screen existed for phones it would still be a waist because it would have the same scaling

I have to get really close to my Z3's screen, before I see jagged edges on letters and symbols. That up close I can even see noise.
From a normal viewing distance, I still see artifacts. They are probably most noticeble on completely white screens. Try to open a new document. Does it look like the screen is completely covered in white? Or does it look a bit spotty?
Most people don't really play graphical intense games, so the resolution isn't that much of an issue.
With LCD, the backlight, is the thing that mostly affect battery performance. And that is decided by the screen size, and not pixels.
With Amoled, the pixels themselves light up, so having a higher resolution makes the pixels smaller, thus they will use less energy.
4K might be overkill, today, since if you use graphical intense, it will affect performance.
But it's not completely wasted.
