No, but you are kind of right... The resolution increases by a factor of two BOTH vertically AND horizontally. And 2*2=4.
Dpx, 21 Sep 2015This was an issue? Really?
Why?
Of course we need a balance between performance and image quality. The added-value of 4K starts lowering the moment Sony itself starts pointing out how it's "unneeded".
Performance considerations aside, the buyer's natural expectation is that the UI (the thing he will most use in his phone) matches the advertised resolution of the screen. It does in every other phone out there, since that's actually the best way to display an UI in a fixed-matrix screen, except in this model it doesn't happen that way -- so yeah, it needs to be disclosed because disappointment and betrayal are likely to follow otherwise.
Anyone who is throwing a fit about this is an idiot.
It's the same as buying a powerful video card for your computer. It's on all the time, but it only ramps up to full speed when you NEED it for a game. If it was on all the time that would be a pointless cause of heat and a huge waste of energy. Sony's solution is 100% logical.
Silly trolls.

Anonym, 21 Sep 2015A dead giveaway a 4K screen is not a good choice is when your own UI doesn't even display at t... morenot true. It's not the display that's useless, it's the other hardware bottlenecking it. I remember when the industry said that 1080p was a ridiculous upgrade from 720p. People said that the original iphone had a "high" resolution display. However, its all merely perspective. I think Sony may have been quick seeing as 1440p is currently only a psuedo-standard at the moment, with only some manufacturers including it, but soon enough I feel as though the 4K standard will reach once battery technology and mobile GPUs become efficient enough.

If the UI runs at 1080p and marketing claims this is the best "optimized experience", then you simply DO NOT NEED the 4K screen at all! PERIOD.

Karate Obachi, 21 Sep 2015Oh the irony - if it's not really possible to distinguish 4k from 2k, why have it at all? It's not impossible, it is difficult straight by looking from a normal phone distance. I'm sure if you download a 4K video and zoom in more than you need to, you will see less pixels. It's modern technology, anything like this will sell, hence why manufacturers bring out such things.
Oh the irony - if it's not really possible to distinguish 4k from 2k, why have it at all?
4K is only really useful when you have the content to support it, plus if you have data/WiFi connection that is capable of rendering the 4K video. 4K video content is not that wide at the moment, so 1080p is still the most popular out there for a HD video/stream. Also, when you have a 1080p format and a 4K format side by side, the difference isn't that great on such a small screen. You're more likely to notice a difference in a 40" or more TV.
So saying all this, I personally would opt for the Z5 and will give the Premium a miss, despite it being a great phone. There is nothing wrong with a sharp 1080p screen.
Anonymous, 21 Sep 2015Also, this article already confirms it would sport 4K UHD as its native resolution, not 2K QHDIt doesnt
Everest , 20 Sep 2015Adaptive 4K, nailed samsung I'm not going to say Samsung is great, but S6/Note5 the whole UI, media and games run at 2K aka 1440P not 1080P like Sony and battery life is very good. I own the S6 the battery stays for one day and 10 hrs.
Now if only the rumored 6.44" 4K Z5 Ultra is true, I'd be considering waiting for that and buying that if and only if Sony could also implement this tech on the Ultra (which shouldn't be all that difficult since they could by now possibly do it on the Premium) and if and only if they could promise the same battery endurance of 2 days (or more if they are to equip Ultra with a larger batt cap)

Its only QHD screen displaying FHD c... moreIf Sony is to follow what you have described, their marketing would be useless as much as their phone would. If so that the phone's GPU could handle decoding 4K UHD content, but will be limited by the phone's display/screen resolution of 2K QHD then it should prove such a wasted tech
Again, here is the question:
Who needs a 4k display? I have decided long ago that 1080p is the maximum you will need unless you are heavily short sighted. Only Sony need this 4k technology to show people that they are still in the game. They need 4k on a phone to demonstrate that they are pushing 4k for all their equipment. They need 4k because they want to show the world that they "own" 4k. They need 4k screen to push their 4k contents!
The other question is: will I buy a phone with a 4k 5.5 inch screen? Yes, definitely! I know, I said previously that I don't need a 4k screen, but is there actually any harm in having too many pixels? Same 2 day battery life sounds cool to me, and downgrading to 1080p when working on demanding stuff sure does reduce lags (and temperature).
And remember, people who dislike the 4k screen, they made the Z5 for you guys! Z5p is not for you!
