Why most people not reading the subject, this is a top spec workhorse - not something you buy to check your emails and check in to your local Starbucks on facebook.
Surface book starts from $1499 and as most of you can see can go up to $3199.
Everybody can estimate their needs, budget and their "believe" to choose wisely.
( I own a surface3(non-pro) and a desktop with i7, 32gb ddr3, gtx 980ti, 1.2tb ssd and 3x32" screen - but won't change it to a surface book )

Well, you pay the price for quality. Like Macbooks, this laptop is designed and optimised by Microsoft to run exactly how it should. I have no doubt this notebook will be specacular.

I'm no fan of the Windows OS and switched many years ago to OSX, but I know this one could potentially convert me back to it if I ever got sick of my Macbook.

Consider the Microsoft products as 'templates' for the industry. Other manufacturers will take the cue and then produce similar products. Quite a smart tactic from Microsoft.

Asus will probably produce one of the best versions of the Surface Book.

I don't know why people are out here listing Laptops by MSI, Asus and so on. This is not just a laptop it more then that, in tablet mode this is a full on surface tablet capable of running CAD software and in laptop mode it becomes more powerful and delivers 1st class keybord experience. Can ANY. laptop/tablet IN THE WORLD do that?. Considering the innovations (dynamic hinge + detachable gpu ....) that come with the device I think its priced OK

I'm a fan of the Surface Pro lineup, but I somehow do not see the Book as something I'd go with since I have a souped up Alienware (yes, it's heavy) that has 2 SSDs that adds up to more than 1TB, upgradable to 16GB RAM (curently 12GB), with dedicated GPU. I use it for creating 3D content, and has been great over the past 2 years +.

The price for being compact is twice more for the Book, and I'd need that added thickness for proper ventilation, and customization. As an on the go device, I'd rather get the Pro 4 that can still do excellent job.

But I'm not saying the Surface Book is bad. Excellent job that Microsoft is stepping up the game on hardware than all other brands combined. It's making the i-fans think.

The extra charge is just from the upgrade to 1TB from 512 GB which is logical.

200$ for the GeForce over integrated Graphics
                            200$ for the i7 over i5
                            100$ for the 16GB over 8GB RAM
                            500$ for the 1TB over 512GB Space
                            ----------------------------------------------------------------------
1000$+500$ (256GB to 1TB) for the Full pack over 256GB-i5-Intel Graphics
                            1699$ + 1500$ = 3199 USD

If you are not Power user, Heavy Gamer or Professional in graphics 1TB version is waste of money and i5-256-Integrated graphics is even more than what you need.

The price is neither massive nor illogical as some other manufacturer do freely.

                              My laptop, Asus Q551LN:
                              - Full aluminum build, Asus logo lights up,
                              - i7 CPU, 8GB Ram (upgradeable).
                              - Dedicated Nvidia 840m 2gb gfx.
                              - Superb 1080p IPS display. 10 point touchscreen and convertible to tablet (360 degree rotation).
                              - CD/DVD Rom drive (replaced it with a secondary hard drive).
                              - Full backlit keyboard with excellent responsive keys.
                              - 3 USB 3.0 ports. Subwoofer port for the subwoofer that comes with it. Dedicated volume buttons on the side and start menu button as well.
                              - Vents are in the back so my hands don't feel any heat! Excellent ventilation.
                              - It has Bang & Olufsen speakers, really high quality and loud speakers! That brand of speakers is found in Mercedes SLS AMG and Audi A8 cars.

I paid 800 USD for it. I love my reliable laptop! Way more than the extremely overpriced surface book.

Relatively though, the price is justified with the MSI.
