Nexus has had a rocky or compromised history. The Nexus 4 had the over heading issue. Nexus 5 just has the not so great Camera, the rest of the phone is ok. Nexus 6 is too big for most people, and Nexus 5X is not the bargain nexus promised, but it seems to come close. I may update my Nexus 4 to a 5X. The Moto X may be too large, the One+2 also. The Galaxy S5 and Sony Z3 are the other two candidates for a similar price I see.

The Nexus line started its downfall with the Nexus 6. They changed their main concept completely.
They used to make what they thought was groundbreaking android showcase on the budget, and as a result appealed to the general consumer by far the most. Now they are trying to appeal to the general consumer, while not being appealing at all.
