But what Google is trying to "sell" here is on-the-fly maps that are always up-to-date with all the additional perks (road work/blocks, gas prices,...).
Yeah, for that luxury you need a pricey 3G data plan :/
"Additionally, Maps will show you gas prices at gas stations that are along your route (or near it). This means that, should you want to stop for gas, you'll immediately have an idea of which station is the cheapest. You can then choose to add it as a detour and navigate to it before continuing your journey."
OMG! Someone in the navigation business is actually using their brain cells?! It's a miracle!

I recall gas prices being displayed my a beta version of google maps during the era of Kitkat 4.4, As the RC got out the feature was pulled. The prices then had a issues not updating up to 2 to 3 days after a change.
However detour is something interesting. Would love to see how it would be implemented on Android Auto.
I've been waiting for this for like 3 years only. Finally...
Unfortunately, a fantastic route-planning feature is still missing. It's available in the browser, why not the app itself? I guess route-planning is best done at home and then sent to device but still, it would be great to have it everywhere at hand.
useless, google can you give us an offline maps like Nokia here maps. and please fix the navigation orientation, this is absolutely terrible, I like google app really, but I hate google maps with passion, please work on it google, add useful features not gimmicks/
Meanwhile, Apple maps still trying to figure out how to not let people get lost :p
Omg, finally. I thought this feature should have been there. Turns out I was actually searching for a ghost. This definitely will come handy.
