In here is burning rubbers!
Slow OS, ugly and tick phone...Nokia you disappoint me again and again! The same phone with android OS i would take it right away, even if ugly and tick!
Symbian isn't proprietary. The whole thing, including the S60 GUI, was made open source a few months back and is now developed by the Symbian Foundation. http://www.symbian.org/symbian-feature-set/symbian-is-open-source
Keith, 29 Mar 2010Who cares if Symbian isn't proprietary any more? For all intents and purposes it is. Only 2 ... moreSymbian 4 is gonna be better than android and windows phone, and a whole lot more affordable.
Anonymous, 29 Mar 2010my nokia 5800 xm has also multitouch capabilities. download pocket piano from mobile8 and see ... moreyes that's very relevant, we're all aware by now that if the programmer puts his mind to it, he can achieve multi touch on a resistive screen.
Anonymous, 29 Mar 2010Symbian ^3 isn't proprietary GSMArena, it is open source. The article should be fixed. Who cares if Symbian isn't proprietary any more? For all intents and purposes it is. Only 2 OEMs build Symbian phone and at least one of them (SE) has a doubtful future in the Symbian camp (if not in the smartphone business altogether). The only OEM driving Symbian today is Nokia. So while it's not strictly proprietary, I doubt the Symbian Foundation weighs input from HTC as heavily they consider Nokia's take on any issue.
choy, 29 Mar 2010to the dude tht says the samsung screen sucks pree that link..http://blog.gsmarena.com/so-you-... moreAnd you totally missed the point of the original comment.
The average consumer does not pick one phone over another based on whether its AMOLED or Super AMOLED. They pick their phones based on their needs. The 150 000 apps in Apple's app store basically help meet whatever need most people have. That's why the iPhone sells so well.
And that's why Android is taking off too. It's already got 30 000 apps in the store in a few months.
Any mobile OS is going to live and die today by the quality of their apps and their native app store. Symbian can have the nicest OS and it won't matter unless their apps and app delivery improves.
The iPhone shows that you don't need the best hardware or even the most free OS to be able to sell phones. You just need to have software that let's people do what they want to do with their phones.
So they'll put Symbian^3 on this phone and come out with Symbian^4 by the end of the year and treat Symbian^3 like their doing with Maemo 5 on N900. That software has become abandonware ever since Nokia decided to merge Maemo with Intel's Moblin and form Meego.
Nokia needs to get its crap together. They don't have a cohesive strategy at all. And their after-sales support is terrible. And now with the Symbian fragmentation going on, what developer is going to want to fill the Ovi store, when he/she doesn't know which OS Nokia is going to support in 6 months?
Aside for all that, Nokia still doesn't get it. It's not about the pretty pixels on the OS. It's about integration with the cloud and apps, particularly apps delivered through an OS manager hosted app store. Ovi's services and its app store are way, way behind on this front. So instead of developing this side of the house, what does Nokia do? They focus on making the UI prettier.
Come on Nokia. Get it together. If you don't Android, Blackberry and the iPhone are going to eat your lunch (smartphone market), and the cheap developing world OEMs are going to eat your dinner (dumbphone market).
And if anybody think Nokia can't be taken down (in the smartphone segment at least), just look at the company that basically helped pioneer the smartphone and handhelds: Palm. And the WebOS is way tighter than anything Symbian will be putting out for the next little while.
It has a capacitive AMOLED screen and Divx-support. Also HDMI and 720p recording and playback. I seen the phone live in Barcelona. Quite slim also...
