Google is said to house the top developers in the world. It's really unfortunate that it doesn't translate to them making the best user experiences with regards to software. They consistently ignore users every step of the way content only to marvel in their own "magnificence". They should really back away from developing any user facing software and leave it to developers that care!

This is why I'm switching to WP, Android has all these cool features, and google is removing them one by one, at least WP has nothing for Microsoft to remove!

Google has squandered a great opportunity to make hangouts into an app that rules them all. There's no reason hangouts shouldn't have been developed to have all the features of Whatsapp and also have SMS and MMS integration that actually works well.
Shame on you Google... shame on you!

How about Google just get rid of hangouts full stop, they may love it in America,I know of no-one who uses it,if Google want to do something sensible, how about they spend some of their huge cash reserves outside of America and do deals with firms in Europe etc and get Voice/talk working outside America and India,it's about the only one of their services outside of search that lots of people would be interested in,oh no,they won't do it because it would probably mean them not making a profit and if there is one thing the Google top clan love,it's more money, one day they might actually do something useful with it all,I never believed the first load of bs they put out about do no evil,I certainly don't understand the latest load of bs around alphabet apart from its a good way for them to carry on with their world wide tax con,as soon as someone comes up with an os that is propey secure and can actually use real software that we have all used for 30 years,I.e Microsoft products on mobile handheld computers,Google have had it,but they very good at killing off competition, either by using others greed and just buying out the new possible competition or by just copying new ideas and using the cash reserves to pay for lawyers to bankrupt others in court and legal bills...
Google clan are just another bunch of greedy yanks, they have no interest in doing anything for free.
And the funniest bit about android is that the one firm that makes the most profit from it,is the one firm who tried to kill it at birth, have never invested a penny in it but get paid at least $20 for every device ever made, good old Microsoft...
Me committed suicide with the coco ups after winmo 6.5 and then lieing to everyone about what they were doing,it cost them the 90% of the enterprise market that they had in their pocket...idiots..

that's a kick in the gooch, as MMS messages are a pain, and being able to switch between SMS and hangouts in the same application makes life so much easier.

Well when they stupidly did away with the Hangouts widget...i guess the writing was on the wall.

I much preferred to use Hangouts for SMS than Messanger. But Messanger has a widget and that really important to me.

Messanger, however, doesn't work in multi-window on my Note 4 (which Hangouts and most other Google apps, including the Play Store, do)

It's not. No amount of new features makes up for it if SMS is taken out.
