Also, xiaomi always lags in providing android updates but one thing it makes sure that every phone gets the latest MIUI version just like Apple does. And since MIUI is heavily customized, what matters most is the latest MIUI version with latest updates.
Xiaomi has promised that it will provide Marshmallow update for Redmi Note 3, so it will obviously come but after that updates in Android version are doubtful, but be assured that Xiaomi will keep supporting your device for as long as possible by updating it to latest MIUI version and that's what matters apart from some proprietary android features.
Just an example, I had Redmi Note 4G which launched on Android Kitkat 4.4.4 with MIUI 5 on top of it. Its Android version is still 4.4.4 but it has latest MIUI version, that is MIUI 8.

Yep. Your phone redmi note 3 will get an update of marshmallow very soon. Xiaomi phones are not as popular as other OEM like motorola. htc and samsung for major software updates.
But now xiaomi phones like MI4 phones are getting marshmallow 6.0.1 version update. Soon Redmi note 3 and note 2 phones will get update. All you need is little patience. Now this major software update is under testing in most xiaomi phones.
