Samsung don't. Displays are poor as hell. And Samsung support says poor TN-like viewing angle that AMOLED has is expected behavior. So it's ok for cheap budget devices, but not for premium.

yes, it is excessive. 2 large retailers, including largest and 2 largest mobile operators boycotts samsung for defect rates, so samsung marketshare dropped twice in russia. from 40% to 20%.

Anonymous, 03 Jan 2016You are not thinking because they invested in JDI before they went to Samsung as backup. Pleas... moreAgain, read the article.
The only reason why Apple invested in JDI was to get cheaper OLED, as Samsung has high margins due to their monopoly on the OLED market.
With Samsung's margins dropped due to selling to other manufacturers and through economies of scale, Apple is looking to go to Samsung and cut JDI out of the display supply chain. This is not a "back-up". This is Samsung and LG producing all the OLEDs in the future iPhone with SHARP and JDI not even in the picture.

Also, even today, SHARP and JDI are used as back-up with LG as the main supplier. LG makes all the iMac displays, most of the macbook displays, and 90% of Apple Watch displays.

I have a Note 3 and it has near-perfect viewing angles. Even if I tilt it 180 degrees, the colors barely shift. The Note 3 came out nearly 3 years ago.

The issue with SHARP IS Yield rates.

                                Again, read the article:

“Currently, LG Display and Sharp are both stipulated as display suppliers for the new iPad Mini. Problem is, LGD is the only one having any success at achieving production, according to a DisplaySearch Japan analyst cited in a Nikkei report. But even LGD is not faring that well at the moment. The report characterizes production at LGD as “not close to full production.”

SHARP isn't at full production because of terrible yield rates, not because they lacked facilities. If SHARP didn't have enough facilities, Apple wouldn't have even signed a contract with them. This is basic supply chain knowledge and common sense. You do not sign a manufacturing contract with a manufacturer who doesn't have enough facilities to meet your demands.

The simple truth is that Apple was looking for any display manufacturer besides Samsung. They thought SHARP could do it, but found out they were inferior to Samsung. The end.
