I got an extension until next year yesterday having never payed a dime for the last 3 years.
WhatsApp is just soo simple to use, I've used other Messenger services and I find myself telling people lets continue this in WhatsApp...(I'm looking at you Facebook Messenger)

Has ANYONE ever paid the fee? I get extensions as soon as it's about to expire including everyone else I know.

I think they can continue annual fee via service provider. I'm not sure about its possibilities.. But there is too many risks. They need to tie up with all the service providers. That is the first and biggest problem. Both WhatsApp and service providers should get profits in order to do it.

Excellent. Another way to spam with commercial messages. Hope there is regulation to block this as can be done with SMS.

My Whatsapp fees have been extended for free for three times already for the last 3 years. Never paid a penny. Glad they remove the fee. I was thinking to move to Wechat like all my friends.

They should have tried the use of premium text (SMS) message as another way of making payments

That's good. Given how stiff the competition is for IM apps they would've had the rug pulled from under them if they carried on charging when everyone else is offering the same thing for less.
