This is no surprise, the sales trend is very clear and there is nothing to indicate that it will change anytime soon.
The love affair with tablets is over. Now that the novelty's worn off customers are realizing them for what they are: toys. Unlike smartphones and PCs, which are considered essential devices in today's world, tablets are non-essential devices. A recent survey by the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/jason-mander/smartphones-fly-as-tablets-take-a-nose-dive_b_9218110.html) indicated that only 4% of users listed a tablet as the most essential device and this was consistent across all locations and demographics (by comparison, PCs, laptops and smartphones ranked much higher, at roughly 32% each). To shell out $500 on a non-essential toy seems pretty excessive (which may explain why even iPad customers are favoring the smaller and cheaper mini - 47% in 2015 compared to 32% in 2014). On the other hand, people have no problem spending huge amounts of money on a Surface Pro, since it offers the functionality of a laptop (IDC data showed that the vast majority of Surface buyers chose the expensive Pro instead of the cheaper non-Pro).
Tablets like the iPad might be useful for some niche use cases but the emergence of hybrid, 2-in-1 devices like the Surface Pro will soon make the existence of mobile tablets redundant. I usually use my Surface Pro 4 like a tablet, touching my way around with the keyboard folded back (no gorilla arms). It's great for light consumption, but can also do serious work (or serious play) when needed. Honestly, after getting the Surface Pro 4 I have no desire to buy a mobile tablet again.
Anonymous, 17 Feb 2016Buying a tablet for productivity means one has a screw lose. Tablet is a terrible form factor ... moreI agree completely but I think you are missing my point. Businesses buying tablets for staff to use in the field quickly find that they are limited to a hand full of apps that, overtime as things change, feel even more limited. In the past management seldom realized these limitations and often had expectations that with a tablet, SIM & RDP anything could be achieved. For practical reasons most prefer using their phone/laptop and these days there is probably more than a few of us that have a tablet or two collecting dust in the office. 2-3 years ago schools and businesses were buying iPads in bulk, not so much these days, so naturally volumes will drop.
Anonymous, 18 Feb 2016You are wrong. Laptops have as much battery, they're just heavy to do so. The only thing that ... moreThere is no normal laptop that is set to high performance mode that will last as long as iPad Air that always has the power on tap from a far more efficient chip and OS on a full charge. Those are not the only things a tablet is better at, tablets like the iPad also have a ton of well tailored apps, the Surface in the other hand has all sorts of issues.
Lol, Surface is successful? Last I checked iPad remains the only truly successful tablet range around, but please post numbers that prove the Surface is a success, waiting for a good laugh. :)
It's POST IPAD ERA now !!
Tim Cook, your iPad or iPad Pro absolute no way to replace PC.
(forget about ipad mini)

The only thing that tablets a have over laptops is the ease of use and ease to carry. For everything else laptops are better (battery, things to do, etc).
That's why surface pros are so successful, they purport to do both tablet and laptop. Of course they do neither, but people don't get it (surface pro is less easy to use/carry than an Ipad and more useless than a proper laptop).

I als have to laugh at people who claim tablets ar useless. A small laptop still guzzles through battery at an alarming rate, making it useless for traveling and having to deal with flight delays and long flights. My iPad always comes in handy, I can work on a document and still have enough battery after that to watch a few movies, play a game or two and listen to music, by the time I land I still have around 40-50% battery to use my iPad to navigate with Google Maps if needed or use it to take notes and sync them to laptop and my smartphone.
Anonymous, 17 Feb 2016Buying a tablet for productivity means one has a screw lose. Tablet is a terrible form factor ... moreStop right there! how dare you exude logic and form a coherent well thought out argument? Don't you know apple zealots have feelings?
RaGsMaRtY, 17 Feb 2016This means technically the end of Tablet Era!
People seem to be of no need for tablets anymor... moreActually Tablets still sell great(ly). They just have a lower cycle of replacement. A phablet (practically most phones these days are phablets) gets replaced every 2 years at most.
Phablets rule due to their replace-ability, not their quality...
Dovice, 17 Feb 2016Am calling it now. The iPad has always and still is a very slick and cleverly marketed laptop ... moreWhat's the point of a mac pad? It both kills the immediacy of an Ipad and the precision of a mac book. One is a tool for production another for consumption. A mac pad is none, I really hope Apple won't emulate Microsoft in that, although I don't have much faith in Cook, not one new or important idea that man.

The productive tab fad would die very fast, it literally solves no problem. People would soon Re-realize how much better laptops are for productivity. Especially those small ones that are both easy to carry and easy to work on...
What's dumber than expecting tablets to soar in sales , is to think that they are not productive enough... Hybrids are a new sector that's why it is growing , give it time and it will die faster than any other category...
i am using a 3gb ram tab s. i am waiting for the next true uggrade- a 3gb+ ram device, probably 4gb ram. tab s2 is still 3gb ram.
yes manufacturer has difficulty to keep increasing the ram amount in device. so this is the clue whether the new model number is a new true upgrade.
While iPads are great tablets they are not great for productivity and quickly ends up in the toy category beside Tablet PC's such as the Surface when it comes to business users. But in saying that the budget Tablet PC's are not much better than budget Tablets. The Surface dominates this category for the same reasons iPads are the king of tablets, quality! Android devices are on a different mission in this game as their sole purpose is to flood the world with cheap disposable devices replacing the junk mail our mail boxes!
Stingger, 17 Feb 2016That is a solid point but on paper only. If that was true then why are mobile phones still ris... moreCompletely different use cases. iPads for the majority of people are media devices - videos, magazines, productivity and perhaps the occasional game or so. They are rarely used as communication devices and hardly ever as dedicated cameras. As such, performance of an older model is more than sufficient even nowadays.
Smartphones serve for communication, media, gaming and photography. There's not a single tablet that I know that can beat a phone in any of these, especially photography, simply because it's awkward to take photos with a tablet.
Anonymous, 17 Feb 2016Because they are sellin SAME TABLET since 2010 with processor changes only.Apple is still leading the pack. Did you not read that? Tablet's are just oversold now, they don't serve as much of a purpose as smartphones & phablets.
iPads amongst tablets are the best you can buy.
AnonD-501073, 17 Feb 2016Tablets are useless for someone owning a phablet(especially note 4, 5)Exactly. Plus many people thought that tableta have some advantage over a large smarpjone, but now they realise that it's a complete rip off for fools who buy a tablet just for watching videos.
bring something new to tablet interface. not a blown out phone interface.
