When I was thinking about buying it, I read about the camera lenses having some kind of " protective coating" which would quickly wear off and then those hairline-scratches would soon appear and those being fixable with the right kind of toothpaste. Anyway, I know the new owner is happy with it while I wasn't. :)

I don't know if you got a defective unit or not, but mine and my wife's produce stunning photos, overall better than iPhone 6. True it's not as detailed as other higher MP cameras, but definitely not blurry. The best you can describe them as soft, but not blurred!
I know many people who owns M7 and M8, and only one of them has a defective camera where pictures are so blurred and blueish and full of purple fring.
However, my wife's M8 camera started lately to look kind of blurry, that's because she didn't take enough care which resulted in scratched camera lens.
AnonD-372282, 27 Feb 2016I never faced the purple problem in my M7 or M8... My co-worker, has just changed his M7 for OnePlus One, and guess what, hos phone also had that problem with the camera. Just because you didnt have it, doesnt mean it wasnt widespread. There is also a known fact that HTC updated the camera module that they were installing on M7 about 8 months after the initial release.
M8 still had a purple problem, but much less widespread as M7

AnonD-372282, 27 Feb 2016Because your camera lens is full if scratches, which results in bleary pictures I did clean it, people at XDA recommended to use toothpaste to fix that problem. I did, but I guess my unit was too deeply scratched to get rid all of them. The pictures were always too blurry since the very first day I bought the phone and I never ever abuse my devices, so I guess my unit was a bad one then... The dude I sold my phone said that the camera is fine, though.
The photos GSM Arena took for the review doesn't look that good either (details are too blurry), so did they also have a bad unit? Or is that the quality everyone in here refers as being decent or one of the best smartphone cameras.

Anonymous, 26 Feb 2016HTC just die already! Why. Htc launches flagship after samsung lg sony. That is why htc is going to down.
What HTC needs to do is tell us a little more...I have the M8 and waited on the M9 release ad as we know it was nothing to write home about, so I decided to wait until this year for the next HTC flagship.
I am looking hard at the S7...getting tired of waiting just to see they have produced nothing worth upgrading to.
Not everyone cares about a camera, I rely on my phone for work not selfies.
I own One M8 and pictures nowdays are stunning, it took few updates from release to get to this point. And my wife has M9 and when she listend YouTube sound is better than on her Macbook AIR.
I'm with HTC since they released a Desire HD, and while owning one of their phones I always felt more unique in some way as not every other person who holds same thing in their hands. One of my friends, she is obsessed with iPhones and owns 6S plus. Just last week said that my M8 looks realy nice. I just smiled probably she found familiarity with hers :) and replied: Thank you, I need new one this as it is 2 years old. And she was so confused :)
If I would add that pictures of that evening were better on mine would be to much, right :)... As you do need to have an eye how to capture a moment & still hand :P
AnonD-372282, 27 Feb 2016Troll troll.. You call me a troll for not liking the same device as you worship? Does not make any sense.

Anonymous, 26 Feb 2016The M7 also lacked an sd slot. And im pretty sure the M8 had the purple problem tooI never faced the purple problem in my M7 or M8... Obviously, few defective units had this problem, and people thought it is a common problem with Ultrapixel, which is totally wrong.
AnonD-77892, 26 Feb 2016HTC M7 4MP camera with marketing name "ultra pixel" to fool people = fail :DYou are still here???
Either you care about HTC, or you are such a hatter!! I think you are the hatter, so please leave us alone, and never comeback again.
AnonD-372282, 27 Feb 2016And why you are in every HTC news, troll? I wanted to say the same thing.
Kress, 26 Feb 2016By M7 and M8 they said similar words. How it ended we all know.My M7 and M8 had the best camera overall
