Merwyn Fernandes, 25 May 2016This is tend to happen the smartphone market is extremely saturated and with the introduction ... moreThe most famous smartphone companies are producing in China as well or in Malaysia or Vietnam...production costs should be similar to the other less known chinese companies.
But the smartphones produced by the famous companies are much more expensive because you need to pay for the brand. And when the glass cracks for no reason in your pocket you have too pay even more if you want to repair it!
All part of the Plan
Sales down, profitability up....

Unfortunately Sony is the worse company on mobile devices market. The last good device I've seen from them was 8" Z3 Tablet. And they shouldn't blame anyone or anything for this but their own management: Lack of ideas, lack of vision, but most importantly - lack of inspiration.
My friend was a Sony rep .He use to call on mobile phone shops. He got retrenched last month.
'Sony has published its forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017'
Either Sony can predict the future, I guess it will be March 31, 2016.
The fact they are selling at all is a surprise..... nvm its just shipment
In terms of business strategy, they ruined Sony mobile years ago with bi-annual flagship releases, which canabalised on its own product sales; They over saturated the lower and mid tier market so no brand could be established on a single effective mid tier offering; they focused this year on a declining mid tier market with the introduction of their X-series, which are priced like flagship phones; and they removed their Z series, the only series with brand recognition and in a highly consumerised market where the average mobile replacement is 1.5 years. Their demise is self inflicted as opposed to being victim to market demand.
Imo, sony phone sales dwindling bcause their phones design are somewhat a bit bland (although still premium) compared to the others.. Sigh..
in the future sony will suffer more . x seris dose not hit all market yet
Not surprising at all. Missed Sony Style design, increased thickness, ambiguous battery life and camera, removed waterproof, poor quality control, hugely overpriced – it’s all Sony smartphones nowadays are about. Every new iteration of devices becomes less interesting to potential customer and even Sony fan boys than previous one. Company management has no idea about smartphones market and what is worse – have no idea on how to join modern smartphone with traditional Sony design and philosophy.
MikeZoom, 25 May 2016Just 20% drop is a miracle ! I expected a lot worse considering the last good phone Sony made ... moreKeep in mind X series is not even released yet.
So the next yearly result will be much worse than this. Much worse.

So they can sell a midranger to unsuspecting customers who don't know any better. That's why the x performance is nowhere to be seen yet, they want people to buy the x first.
Only company worse than Sony is blackberry. Its a real shame, they used to be good just two years ago.
Their marketing plan is horrible and naming the "X" as a flagship priced midranger is just ridiculous and removing the IP68 to non premium models really makes people wonder. The Z5 series was an amazing set, but the X is a joke.
This is tend to happen the smartphone market is extremely saturated and with the introduction of premium Chinese phones the more reputed companies are facing huge losses these companies just can't compete with Chinese in terms of the price and value for money
when a company announces a model and then delays it for months(or announces the market releae after 6months) a lot peopl refrain from buying the current company flagship(or midranger for that matter) till the new model arrives, and if for some reason they do want to change the phone due to other reasons, they'll go for the current most updated model which is probably from another company..there are few fanboys in the world now. even here at gsma people are more neutral and voice correct opinions..
