i like the idea of this card, affordable vr card and very good price but what this is telling me is amd aren't able to push out cards fast enough anymore compared to NVidia, most likely due to there financial situation, if they weren't in trouble then they should have had the 490x as well as this card. this is not a good sign as we need amd for competition. I have nvidea cards but I want to see amd do well as well coz competition is a good thing but this worry's me coz it shows us they really cant compete at the high end on the same time scale as nvidea, I hope it dosent end up like the processor (really far behind)
not a fan of SLI/Crossfire so i don't know if i'll be using two of these to match gtx 1000 series performance. 2x RX 480 may defeat gtx 1080 in benchmarks but i don't think games will get same FPS since not all games like sli/crossfire setup.
packs a punch for the price though. go RED!
AnonD-442287, 01 Jun 2016You didn't get the 3.5/4 joke i guess. :p It's hard to detect sarcasm in the text, so yeah, it went unnoticed I'm afraid XD There was an equal chance for you to be serious about it.
DarkReed, 01 Jun 2016Explain it please!i could be wrong, but this is what i know:
The GTX 970 has a memory issue which Nvidia tried to hide on launch. the 4GB of VRAM is actually 3.5GB + 0.5GB VRAM. the 0.5GB is slower compared to the rest so it causes FPS dips in some games that use more than 3.5GB VRAM. Some gamers reported games freezing or crashing when VRAM usage crossed 3.5GB. so basically, only 3.5GB is useful VRAM out of 4GB VRAM. that's why, i rate the GTX 970 a 3.5/4.
3.5/4 refers to the VRAM of the card; 3.5 out of 4 GB is fast & useful. i hope i cleared the concept.
Crossfire two of these and you're already close, at equal or even exceed the 1080 performance yet still $200-$300 cheaper! Hmm. However an Nvidia fanboy look at it, that crazy!
Anonymous, 01 Jun 2016Well you should read more too. First, Vega is expected to launch >=2017. And it uses HBM2 w... moreVega will be releasing later this year. To compete with 1080ti. Because guess what Nvidia (as always) will release the 1080ti in 3-4 month screwing all the people who bought the 1080. wit the same price ;)
AnonD-376219, 01 Jun 20162x RX 480 in crossfire are as powerful as a gtx 1080
Gtx 1080: $700
2 RX 480 : $400
Very ... moreHaha, I have this kind of performance for 2 years for $550 (2x gtx 970s).
Saying that buying twin cards is a good move it's only because they don't know what they're talking about.
More latency, some games don't support it well, others don't support it at all (just cause 3 anyone?). It's a non serious propitious to say that any twin card setup is a better value, there is a reason why twin polarised are cheaper and that's not because they are a better value.
If would want gtx 1080 performance buy a gtx 1070 for $370 and jack up the clocks. Cheaper than twin polarised, half the power consumption and better performance in most occasions ...
AMD should start getting serious, else nobody will take them seriously...
AnonD-454153, 01 Jun 2016read more boy, vega is coming soon and its faster than nvidia 1080 so pls stfuWell you should read more too. First, Vega is expected to launch >=2017. And it uses HBM2 which is more expensive than GDDR5X. So it won't be cheap, and by the time we get there, a new nVidia series will be near launch too.
AnonD-442287, 01 Jun 2016You didn't get the 3.5/4 joke i guess. :p Explain it please!
AnonD-442287, 01 Jun 2016i rate the GTX 970 a 3.5/4 I would rate it 7/10. It's right up there with all the good cards, too bad NVIDIA didn't mention that little VRAM memory trick they pulled, perhaps hoping people won't notice. Not a good marketing move.
AnonD-376219, 01 Jun 2016What? So wait let me get this straight. You're happy that AMD made this good card for a good p... moreIts a free market. I like Nvidia cards, so I buy them. You like AMD products, so you buy them.
There's a lot of both good and bad I can say about Nvidia, and some things about AMD, but overall I'm far more satisfied with Nvidia products I've used in the past than those AMD products I've used, so I'll keep buying green cards for a while longer.
AnonD-544038, 01 Jun 2016You can obviously see that AMD is desperate, cant make a gpu that even comes close to the 1080... moreread more boy, vega is coming soon and its faster than nvidia 1080 so pls stfu
AnonD-376219, 01 Jun 2016What? So wait let me get this straight. You're happy that AMD made this good card for a good p... moreI think he only pointed out that this type of move helps keep nVidia honest. That actually benefits all PC gamers, as a good/reliable gaming experience becomes much more affordable, whichever your card-maker preference is. All in all, great news for consumers.
Yuri84, 01 Jun 2016I'm a huge Nvidia fan and this product makes me extremely happy. $200 for a powerful card. Las... moreWhat? So wait let me get this straight. You're happy that AMD made this good card for a good price. Just so Nvidia can lower their price? And after all that effort from AMD you will give you're money to Nvida? What's wrong with you people. Give you're kudos to AMD. Not Nvidia. Let Nvidia lose some share and learn for not overcharging and screwing their users with faulty drivers releasing 3 times a month.
AnonD-376219, 01 Jun 2016Well if you look closely at the specification you will notice that RX 480 has the same specifi... morewell, in my country it will be overpriced due to shipping charges and taxes, but still, i'd rather wait for AMDs next gen of flagship GPUs and also the less powerful GPUs of the 1000 series from Nvidia. it'll help in price drops.
btw nvidia is gonna unveil the line of 1000 series GPUs in june or later this year? (the 1060, 1050 etc). i find the gtx 1070 interesting for its pricetag. wonder what pricetag 1060/1050 will carry.
AnonD-544038, 01 Jun 2016You can obviously see that AMD is desperate, cant make a gpu that even comes close to the 1080... moreI think you're comment is a desperate joke.
1. r9 390 or GTX 970 are around $300
2. the RX 480 will be faster and more efficient than these 2 cards
3. Developers want powerful efficient, mainstream cards. The RX 480 is mainstream card that can perform as good as the 390x/980 for $220 (8gb vesion)
4. AMD will announce later this year their high end card Vega (HBM2) That card will compete with the 1080ti. Because Nvidia as always will screw their users who bought the 1080 by releasing the 1080ti in 3-4 months at the same price.
AnonD-544038, 01 Jun 2016You can obviously see that AMD is desperate, cant make a gpu that even comes close to the 1080... moreWith that being said, NVIDIA is not doing all that great, since that GTX 970 mess (hence the lower price of 1070/1080, they need to get their customers back). And I'm sure 1070 will have the same BS memory as 970. Made me go for R9 390X instead. AMD makes far better cards, then people usually say. Just not many of them realising it.
