Lx7, 02 Oct 2010Thanks for enlightening me that XDA developers also repair and maintains Samsung phone HARDWAR... moreWell, a lot of the support customers want is all software-based, like how to update or fix a firmware issue. I say it's a 50-50 split that consumers require assistance on both hardware and software.
For the hardware part, I don't see how Samsung will ditch its support entirely. Read the article and it explicitly states that the support for Symbian OS is dropped, but there is no concrete mention that devices powered by Symbian won't be supported, hardware-wise. In terms of replacing the battery, screen or other parts, there's still a high chance of support from either Samsung or its 3rd-party associates. In terms of software however, you're on you own.
And true to Android's decentralized nature, it's near-impossible that Samsung will drop support on it anytime soon. It cannot entirely remove support on phones running on an OS that's open-sourced and easily ported to other devices. It relies on Android, and I don't see Bada being able to top off Android.
It's upsetting how Samsung announced this, but...
it's so exciting to see the competition lately. So many options to choose from. :O)
Now I'm selling my Galaxy S. And I know it won't get any support in a few weeks. Shame on you Samsung!!
So your one year old samsung smartphone which is unfortunately completely abandoned by Samsung has a crack screen or a broken button and i know what you'll do. Install custom Rom, double the Ram, overclock the Cpu or replace the cracked screen with a chinese fake screen. What does support mean, again?

The only thing in your mind when someone says 'support' is software, right?
Alessandro, 02 Oct 2010Just another reason not to get a Samsung phone.indeed :))))
shutting down a blue print will ultimately have an effect on future buyers of their devices.. "trust"; thats something we give to a company we purchased product to.. here clearly, they are destroying the trust of their consumers.. what about consumers that bought their devices on symbian os, of course, they will expect to have great after-sales support for that... think of this samsung users, if samsung can do it on their specific product line, they can also do it to all their future devices.. well samsung, goodluck with that.. hopefully you will give your symbian os based consumers with a very great goodbye support they trully deserve... admit it, samsung price for their devices are expensive...

NOKIA ROCKS!!!
Anonymous, 02 Oct 2010SE and Ericsson was using symbian before Nokia.Ericsson's first smartphone in 1998. was also f... moreYou gotto know between Symbian and symbian UIQ..thats not same!!!
Symbian is devoloped by NOKIA but UIQ is juz for the se model..UIQ phones employ touch screens with a resolution of 208×320 pixels (UIQ 1.x & 2.x) and 240×320 (UIQ 3.x). Depending on the phone, the color depth is 12-bit (4096 colors), 16-bit (65536 colors), 18-bit (262144 colors), and 24-bit (16,777,216 colors) on some newer phones..
Symbian OS (S60) mainly used for NOKIA phones while Symbian UIQ for se phones..
S60 and UIQ are two different platforms built on top of Symbian OS.
S60 is developed by Nokia and UIQ is developed by Symbian but is bought by Ericsson..but they failed on their symbian UIQ..
Actually Symbian provides all the basic OS functionalities like device management and a basic
UI and it is left to other licensees to make their own look and feel..NOKIA first SymbianOS (S60) phone is NOKIA 9210 Communicator..LOL
NOKIA = THE KING OF SYMBIAN OS
Lx7, 02 Oct 2010Samsung has its own lovechild OS BADA, So good luck to all you Samsung Android users, you are ... moreAndroid is self-supported. No need for Samsung's bad customer support since we've got independent devs to help Samsung Android users. Have you seen XDA Developers? They're the crazy guys who brought us those excellent custom ROMs across Samsung, HTC and Motorola phones.
James, 02 Oct 2010Its a pity that Samsung pushes away customers not by phone quality but support quality. Samsun... more+10...and it's because of EXACTLY that of Samsung's piss poor factory firmwares and after sales support that's pissing all over Symbian OS' general reputation (majority of end users can't differentiate firmware and OS) thus far...
They won't be missed and the Symbian Foundation would do well with BETTER partners.Same with SE.
It's not like Samsung are doing that great of a job on their Android initiative either.Cutting corners like excluding LED flash on most of their Galaxy S lineup save for that Epic 4G.I give them full credit for Hummingbird but then again there's still that crap TouchWiz UI circus going on.
Samsung has its own lovechild OS BADA, So good luck to all you Samsung Android users, you are going to need it.
GOt pwNED you samsung phone with symbian os ... ahah take that and hows them apple ;)
Its a pity that Samsung pushes away customers not by phone quality but support quality. Samsung phones are the best, but support can not be worse.
One pays 600 euros on a phone ( as much as a pc system) and a year later you stop support. Shame on you SAMSUNG!!!!!! I have no choice but to stop buying samsung phones, you are not worth trusting!!!! Who knows when samsung will stop support for its new coming phone with winmo 7 or even Bada….. Is it worth investing in another samsung mobile phone…. SURELY NOT!!!!!!
Thanks to HX and Faenil I can still hope for my wonderful omnia HD… a perfect phone!!!!
Bye samsung…... That was my last 600 euros u stole from me!!!!!
Maybe it's better! cause Samsung might be investing more money on Android (means more research development). I think market needs competition and elimination of unfit technology.
i wonder why people reacting much.if samsung shuts its support to symbian, there are plenty of symbian apps websites from which sammy symbian os phone owners can download anything, even firmwares.
people dont just lookint osammy website for fw there are many fws in many websites just google.
Well this could go really bad, or it could go well from this point for Samsung. Nobody knows, good luck Samsung.
The only thing they should work hard on is Bada, because that's the only functional in real life OS they got other than the now being terminated Symbian, and Bada is still so young and not mature enough, i dnt knw how Samsung will play it out, but good luck to them.
Just another reason not to get a Samsung phone.
Why shouldn't Samsung ditch Symbian? Symbian is Nokia's baby lets be honest, Samsung as it proved with the i8910 Omnia HD (which I own) could not implement the real advantages of the OS due to Nokia having to many rights and control over the best functions and applications. With Samsung Symbian was half baked and restricted, BADA is the way to go for them now. Anyone complaining of no longer having support from Samsung should be used to it. Ever buy a product and then a year down the line its obsolete?-It happens to all of us that's business. The king is dead long live the king!
samsung is stupid.
