Anonymous, 04 Aug 2016What drawbacks? Supporting Low-level API Doesn't mean you have direct access to Hardware. ... moreYou do understand that if Vulkan doesn't expose the hardware, be it the Mali or the Adreno, it is in essence no different than OpenGL or Direct3D sitting atop a driver, do you? The Vulkan code paths for Maxwell/Pascal are different from GCN, because you need to expose the architecture to minimize latency and maximize performance, which are the goals of Vulkan.

"Manufacturers just don't care enough about the cheaper phones. Midrangers get the latest update almost a year after the launch and then comes the next one and they are not getting it. I don't even mean cheap phones. I mean the 250 to 500€ phones. But the pricier phones get the latest updates within a month. "
"This, along with insane fragmentation, will always be Android's problems/weaknesses."
Samsung / LG / Sony all pay a licence fee to Goole to run Androie
Samsung / LG / Sony all are in the busines of selling phones,
They will I presume pay an increasing amount for the more advanced version Nougat cost more than Marshmallow which cost more than lollippo
So providing the very latest API to a two or three year old phone can delay a person upgrading
Apple provides the vey latest version to ALL supported devices however NOT all feature work on the older models
Apple does not incur increased feem as it is both S/W and H/W phone seller
This was the same for Nokia running Symbian pre microsoft and Blackberry with Blackberry
O/s
Blackberry with the launch of the Priv is now paying Google to have Android on its phone
having the lastest may mean having some incorporated features that can't be duplicated with a third party app
So with increasing phone sales newer phones get the latest version
All this show is that there is a constant sale of new phones.
So like IOS if there the latest API was available not all phones CPU could handle the API
In addition somthing like the S7 Note / S7 /S7 Edge will IMO easily be capable of running an API when they stop receiving the latest version such is the capacity of the CPU
OK

Supporting Low-level API Doesn't mean you have direct access to Hardware.
It means you have access to function who will be executed natively by hardware instead software, thus improving performance.

I would like to know from this 15.2 percent:
how much is nexus phones?
how much new phones with Marshmallow pre installed?
how much upgraded from Lollipop?
The number increases simply because the likes of Samsung/Sony is just starting to ship new phones with 6.0, so people buying new phones are more likely to be on 6.0.
Doesn't negate the fact that Nougat is right around the corner.
Lollipop will remain the majority as most Chinese phones are still shipping with it.
Actually, Android version doesn't matter anymore. What matters is the monthly security update. No point in having the latest OS version if it is outdated security-wise.

I do wonder if both the Exynos and the Snapdragon versions of the Note7 support Vulkan. Or if it's only the SD version. Having "low-level" APIs has its drawbacks.
