The 4A variant seems legit. Perfect for those who are still used to feature phone but trying to get into smartphone. Yes, there are people like that, such as my sister and my dad :p
Last but not least, it's a perfect device for experiments and low boundary testing of your apps. If your apps run on it, it will run on everything else (mostly, since there are still phones with even lower specs and price).

Told ya! The Redmi 4A is actually a direct competitor to Meizu M3 and other similar super cheap category smartphones. I use M3 at the moment. Have no complaints about it, but still want to try out a Xiaomi device, so 4A looks perfect replacement for my M3, well at least on paper.

Waste of supply chain and production management to do the Standard and A variation.

Save for finger print scanner, little more to differentiate. Should just produce the standard and prime version to increase margins.
