As you said, about its software and processor being the reasons for its price drop, here in this country many don't know about the technical aspects so the brand prices it highly, just trying to fool the customer, of course. As a result, it has not seen a single price drop since it was announced. This trend continues with many premium brands here. The gadgets are overpriced.

Second it has discount in US not that it has $200 since launch, as you can see it was $399 at launch even in US.
Asus is dumb, they put a 1/3" camera with 13MP (yeah, that's like a cheap midrange) and want people to buy it? it's not even better than a Nexus 5X, no one cares about that 3x optical zoom when the sensor is crap.
This is cheap and cool even the same price with zenfone 2 although here was not launched until now
