I'm wondering how to get/enable Snapdragon 820 firmware update for using the Galileo network.
Platon, 15 Dec 2016Are Samsung Galaxy S7 compatible with Galileo? If not, will there be a firmware upgrade ?I have the same question!
There seems to be confusion
The american GPS system is called NavStar, not "GPS".
Are Samsung Galaxy S7 compatible with Galileo?
If not, will there be a firmware upgrade ?

One is encrypted (only for US MIL), the other one is not but has little accuracy. GPS accuracy can be improved using different systems (most popular one using UHF corrections). GPS signal is free but controlled by US goverment (BTW this is also true for the Internet IPs..)

GPS is US military and therefore not suitable for most critical mission systems. Galileo is a huge milestone on EU and its benefits will last for many years.
This project was supposed to be a joint venture with the chinese providing funding but the US pressured the EU to kick china from the project because it's better than gps. That's why it took so long and beidou exists, beidou was originally supposed to be for military use only.
About time?
Even the damn Russians had a satellite based navigational systems first.
God EU is a dinosaur. Even Communist countries (China) are more svelte these days.
Anonymous, 13 Dec 2016I'm guessing you don't know how defense systems work. Not exactly the way he said it, but satellite based geolocation systems do have an imoortant role.

Anonymous, 13 Dec 2016and here I thought the project had been more or less mothballed. Because we haven't heard anyt... moreEurope already has a means of income to support this. Being a member of the EU is not free. Each member country has to pay a lot of taxes to the EU.
I find little interest in using any technology which is commercial and proprietary, since they perpetuate the absence of any real standards.
Super cool!
Lol do what u wanna do spend as much as u can . We just need that in our smartphone as soon as its available ;)
Because apart from motion, these are also used in defence..
From fighter jets to cruise missiles..
Now imagine attacking a usa incase of a drift between usa and eu ( blame trump..lol ) and they use usa's gps to attack usa, usa will know the destination even before the missile is launched...lol
Thats why usa has gps,
Russia hai glonass
India has irnss or navic
China has beideu
And now eu has galileo..
That almost includes all super powers.
P.s. we hope to see irnss support soon in phones too...;)

It's basically a $10 billion middle finger directed at the US. Why US and EU couldn't just reach an agreement, and maintain one system together?

Much much better. So really well done to them
Well, the accuracy of GPS is intentionally maimed (It has an error margin of 40 meters, even on paid services), because of the fear of GPS-aimed missiles or attacks into facilities.
The military version of GPS may track positions also by the centimeter.
Technology, very expensive technology is awesome ^^.
