Nokia finally wake up to the fact they have fallen years behind other manufacturers! Making matters worse, their quality control has dropped significantly after moving their major manufacturing plants from Korea to China. Number of DOA/ELF's, repairs and repeat repairs have almost quadrupled that of other manufacturers.

They not made any major technological improvements nor have they made any breakthrough's or firsts since mid 2000's. Furthermore, everything they have released on the market since then has been based loosely on an existing model, put a new housing on it, re-badge it as a new phone, create hype and pray it sells.

Having worked in the teleco industry (with only selling mobile handsets for the past 12 years), I have seen Nokia from being the most reliable and easiest handset to use on the market to becoming almost the least practical and one of the market's most unreliable handset manufacturers. Personally I find it difficult to understand how they didn't realize much much earlier that they had fallen off the rails and needed a solution to remedy their fault.

Its also about time Nokia stopped using Symbian. It's been a pointless, slow and powerless 'smartphone' OS platform from its initial inception and it's later incarnations haven't been successful either. Nokia need to drop Symbian all together and adapt to a quality platform or redesign their own with hast.

Also, their quality control inspectors are in serious need of quality training to spot anomalies in their production line. There have been countless Nokia handsets which have been opened in front of me over the years with the strangest of faults. They have ranged from; repeat numbers on alphanumeric buttons (two 5 buttons is the most common), keypads not properly aligned and housing forcefully installed over it, housing not properly secured, firmware bugs/glitches, touchscreens misalignment, touchscreen mis-calibration (and inability to re-calibrate as screen doesn't respond) and finally cosmetic imperfections/signs of damage pre-packaging.

Nokia have hopefully learned their lesson and will begin producing quality products that gave them the brand recognition which they once held.

AnonD-37, 10 Feb 2011Read the memo again. He implies that the platform is Symbian and it is burning. He refered to ... moreI can read, and I did read that, there might be a major overhaul for Symbian and that might be the reason why Nokia hasn't released any new phones?
You might also be right, they might also drop Symbian but that will be pretty stupid as they have spent billions of dollars on it.

I think they are ready to go ahead with Meego and I hope it doesn't disappoint. :(

Whatever it is we will find out in the next few days.

          they have

          Ovi life tools
          Ovi Maps mobile/Web
          Ovi Mail
          Ovi sync
          Ovi Store
          Ovi suite

their ecosystem is all there elop is just being ignorant if he thinks that nokia has no ecosystem

symbianOS is capable of high end apps
Qt can support the porting of iOS and androidOS apps to symbianOS

everyone just doesn't like nokai for symbian's UI and nothing else

Rahul, New Delhi, 09 Feb 2011All Indians love Nokia. I used nokia, motorola, Lg, samsung and sony mobiles so far and recent... moreMaybe the almighty brand should move its HQ to India, as people love that company so much.

The rest of the world will move on using something else....nowadays if you offer an iphone vs. N8 in China, even the latter costs about half as much, most would still take an iphone.

I have a colleague who earns about US$400 a month is saving $ to buy the next iphone....

[deleted post]If so, why not simply offer all phones from the almighty brand at US$10? Anything from cheapy 11xx to N8?

Though given the current "trend", people would rather pay US$640 for an iphone 4 than a practically "free" N8...

if there is a fire put out don't jump off

if elop said that then he's a total fool

trust me nokia won't gain much if they go with android and will not gain anything if they go with WP7

with android no gain cause look how many manufactures are already making android phones
yes it willl be fast if nokia makes them cause they are not making their own OS and but not cause they have no actually customization or no ownership of the OS like they do with symbian and meego/maemo plus all the services will be stopped since they will be focusing on androids services

so ovi will die out which nokia doesn't need if they already have that as their own ecosystem

AnonD-171, 10 Feb 2011you too i guess this was the only way to force nokia to use an american smartphone powered OS... moreFor once I would agree with the fans of the almighty brand...stick with Symbian, Meego, or whatever OS being exclusive to the almignty brand.

That's like keep standing at the oil well's platform being on fire, don't jump into the cold water, just let it burn....collapse, and...

By doing so, market share would shrink even further. Then the almighty brand may make C6-02 ~ C6-10, if not C6-5800. Afterall, that's what the almighy being the best at...making numerous variations based on a single phone. (5800 became 5230/5233/5530 or whatever)

Those in advertising / marketing / retail business may still appreciate the existance of the almighty brand, as the company is known to pay high $ for promotions.

The major bad thing that will happen to the eco, if not geo, system is the fact the almighty brand will continue to make numerous handsets which nobody wants to buy...and they simply end up in landfills.

He implies that the platform is Symbian and it is burning. He refered to Symbian as the thing that is dragging Nokia. Now, at the end of his story, the man jumped from the platform (abandoned it), got rescued and survived to tell his tale. If my hunch is correct, this guy MIGHT drop Symbian on Friday, Feb 11th.

We asked for stopwatches on s60 platform,we asked for a new communicater ,we asked for a new n958gb but nokia did nothing except what every other rudy company is doing and trying to make an iphone.Just one example nokia is i wanted to upgrade my e72 so what do you do,you bring out an E5 which is worse and so going backwards again.

You will not listen to your customers, you were flying along and never thought ahead leaving you with ram crippled out of date mobiles..Then you spend the next years bringing out updates to get them working.Wheres the twisty n93 mobiles etc and how many times have we asked you to bring out the next n91??

You people don't understand the meaning of this memo which was sent to all Nokia Staff.

This is just to encourage them to work harder, Nokia will be out of it's mind to go with Android, Eventhou it might be a good choice in one way but will be a major fail in another.

Meego is what will save Nokia, Android is already everywhere and Nokia Doesn't want a common OS. Nokia should have had Symbian UI similar to Maemo UI. If they did they would have had a lot more of positive feed back.

Let's see what they have up their sleeves tomorrow. It's better be good or they will lose all their shares by the end of this year. :(

We are still with you Nokia and Symbian+Meego.

symbian is fine people just complain about the UI which they are working on

meego is fine they just need to release it faster

Qt is amazing but yes again they need to attract Devs too use it

i'm gonna be one of them

i've seen the power of Qt and nokia has shown alot of people specially with the small bubble homescreen

cause if it's that smooth then the full UI overhaul will be even smoother then iOS,WP7,WebOS and androidOS

I also agree that the main downfall of symbian is the UI which is boring at best and time consuming at worst. A good solution will be to tie up with SPB mobile shell and release their devices with SPB mobile shell as default untill they come up with something better. This is the same symbian 6 ui that led to the downfall of symbian UIQ. Nokia's resistance to change to android and windows have only fasten its downfall. Nokia is still the king of hardware durability and customer service.
