By comparison mobile SoCs have become at least 30 times as fast in the meantime.
So while it was indeed the case that laptops and phones occupied different strata regarding performance about a decade ago, it's certainly not the case anymore, at least cpu wise. Blame it on Intel which hasn't innovated for at least 5 years now ... by comparison desktop and laptop GPUs are still a different strata.

Those stupid benchmark scores are over inflated to make it look like they are closer, but there is a huuuuge difference in what they can do.
AnonD-1385, 05 Mar 2017Ok my friend. You have given me a different insight . Thanks for your input.Sorry to bring it up, but none of what he wrote was true. Check Android Authority, they made a great video explaining things.

Can someone break it to me: Any reason why Android phones seem to fall in multi-core performance? By the way the difference between iphone and new gen Qualcomm chip in single performance isn't high. While the difference when it comes to multi core perf is huge!
Though not as impressive as expected there is still much to be seen behind the scenes like sustainable performance and power efficiency and all the other aspects of the chip

When I ran CPU Z it didn't recognise the chip due to the heavy modification. all it could see was a quad core CPU at 2.34 GHz. AND YES. although the powerful chipset it had. It felt like I held in my hand a galaxy s4 on steroids. with massive lags.

8 pages of comments that have no clue or semi have any clue about mobile processors. I can't wrap my head around why benchmarks for mobile chips don't come with wattage.
What you should be thinking is, that after all those years we finally have a processors that took the architecture improvement and major process improvement to focus on power and sustainable performance. This is a mobile chip, download a CPU monitor app and try to launch any other app on SD820 or Apple A10 and see what happens to the temperature and battery amperage within seconds. That will be a very educational exercise.
Kryo was based on the A72, this one is based on A73. Kryo was made on 14nm, this one is made on a far superior 10nm process. This processor has twice the amount of cores too, with addition of the low power cores, but still. Any single of those factors could contribute to higher performance than you see here. However, is there a point if you can use those to lower power dramatically instead? As you can see, finally the greatest decision was made, and it's really sad to see that such behavior is discouraged by so many people who weren't informed about it by the benchmarks. Because I guarantee you, if people took a moment to educate themselves beyond comparing benches, or if benches included power measurements, or at least performance per Watt, the comment sections would look completely different.
AzureLord, 03 Mar 2017what I described was a short explaination of what I did. I had to modify the OS so it will run... moreI understand that. The question is how did you modify it? I can see probably booting android kernel on A10 (and it indeed it's probably long and hard work), but even if you did you mean to say that you run android on bare metal, because I can't imagine using the gpu or the special cores that Apple uses on A10.
I remember a few years back dudes running on iPhone 3GS (IIRC) but it was dead slow, put it was much more doable due to the nature of the SoC used by 3GS (I think it was off the shelf cortex A8 cpu cores which were very much used by Android too, at the time).
So it's possibly doable , but only if you somehow make the android kernel compatible with A10 cores (I guess trial and error given that Apple does not release hardware sources of any kind) and even then what would the point be? I mean you'd be running a gimped A10, booting Android as if you were using 5 years old cores.
I mean what were you hoping to do with that exercise?

Unfortunately for your theory, phones have many background processes running at the same time as your game. Multicore rules.

Back in the day we had Tegras, Ti Omaps, Samsung SoCs were more used and generally a spirit of innovation. That spirit died out once Qualcomm emerged as the sole player and year after year since it underperforms. No wonder Apple is getting faster and faster as years pass by, people trust a hack company to drive innovation on androids and she never does (as she never did; ok she did once when krait cores were first released and that's it).
More like you are running an instance of Android OS as virtual machine or you completely wiped out the iOS and replaced it with Android =D? Former is fine because you can do it on OSX as well but not sure if the virtual machine has access to other peripherals like camera, fingerprint etc.
