About time somebody released a proper phone! This day and age demands more than just making calls, and this little gizmo will deliver big time!

        THIS IS NOT A SMARTPHONE!

You can't put any applications onto it. The price is too high and may only do well in America, where they are used to big phones with outdated specifications.

No 3G? No HSDPA? Only 8GB? The size?

I think they should have made a rival to SE walkman phones, a small nano like device with a phone built in. This is for an exclusive market only, especially at thaat price!

u want 3g/hsdpa, >8gb storage, memory card slot, xenon flash, >3 mp camera, play music, videos, internet browsing, you can... for >US1000, you may have the phone... but you must remember, that this is apple 1st foray into the phone market, which has Nokia, SE, Motorola, Samsung in it (>90% market share)... and apple has 0% market share... therefore affordability has to be the main priority... and the target market should be older ipod owner (1st - 3rd gen) and dissatisfied owner of SE walkman phone, nokia music phone, which most likely using 2g phone... may be after apple gain 10%, 20% market, they can introduce 3g/hsdpa phone and all the bell and whistle that u all wanted... but for US499, u get EDGE, wifi (b/g), bluetooh 2.0 EDR, 3.5" TFT screen, 4GB storage, full html browser, OS X etc... it's a steal.. i surely want one, even just for the UI... alas i live in asia, so i have a year or two of waiting, maybe by then apple will introduce the 3g/hsdpa version...

i don't think all people are into 3g. personally, i don't want to stare into the screen when having a phone conversation. skype and messengers have enough of that. and on the way, you odn't really need that...

                          No 3G/HSDAP. A 2.5G phone in 2007/2008! As a Mac user I feel disappointed.

This is history making. We can talk and discuss about the good and the not so good tech details of the IPhone...but no matter what: this is history making, today. The mobile industry will never be the same from now on and i bet Nokia, Sony Ericsson... and al...are having urgency-meetings today to discuss the before-and-after IPhone introduction into the market. And this is damn good! We will all benefit from this good "war". I was waiting for a true portable pocket-computer-phone-multi-media-device and now we are almost there (i strongly recommend the link someone post above to the Steve Jobs announcement of the IPhone...you should see this thing working to have a clue of what we are talking about here...). Coming up in June...and this is just the beginning.

you're all so close minded. you have no idea the power of this handset.

                              http://www.apple.com/iphone

                              --- Built-in Advanced Sensors ---

iPhone’s accelerometer detects when you rotate the device from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display, so you immediately see the entire width of a web page or a photo in its proper landscape aspect ratio.

The proximity sensor detects when you lift iPhone to your ear and immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches until iPhone is moved away.

An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the display’s brightness to the appropriate level for the current ambient light, thereby enhancing the user experience and saving power at the same time.

...please name me another device that is capable of this. anyone? anyone? bueller? bueller? ferris bueller?

its not a smartphone, its closed platform so you are screwed to what apple have to offer.

Interestingly enough, Apple has had problems with call it's new baby 'Iphone' as it has already been registered as a trademark by another company. I wonder if they will try to cheeky and just drop the 'I' all together or think of something equally flowery to call it.
