This I can agree with. The GS7 series was already perfect in many ways (battery life, display, design, camera, connectivity, wireless charging, IP68 rating, etc). No phone is perfect, but the GS7 series was pretty close. Apart from the lack of USB-C and superb audio capabilities like other flagships of its time, I seriously don't know what can kind of upgrade Samsung could make on the GS8 to make it even better than their GS7. Nonetheless, i was still impress by the GS8 (The Infinity Display and Iris Scanner is my favourite feature), even it's a minor upgrade from the GS7.

Anyway, we need to factor in one non-technical thing that contributed to iPhone 4S (aka iPhone For Steve) sales numbers, that is of the demise of Steve Jobs just a day after the announcement date.
I agree with your saying though. It's difficult to create significantly better sequel following a phenomenal product.

People want to buy something that is new and fairly cool-looking. The S8 met those two criterias easily. Add this to the high S8 price and you get some juicy profit.
Off course, most of their profit also comes from their memory businesses, with RAM and SSDs.

S7 twins are still great choices and the S8 twins are just some minor improvements.

There hasn't been any record sales, actually if you look numbers from last year their phone business is down almost one billion. And lets not forget S8 came to stores one month later and they still couldn't beat last year results when S7 sales peak was already over in q2
