Anonymous, 25 Jul 2017They did. Because there is no flat screen option for those. There are flagships of other brands just for those guys.
Well, almost like all the other topics, there is so much to say regarding this. Basically, mostly it is subjective, for me personally I like (my) the S8 duo, so in other words I prefer a curved screen, but others prefer flat screens, etc. So basically, as I said, it is absolutely subjective. So the bottom line is, that it is the right thing to have both, and preferably as an optional, so everyone can choose the one they prefer.
imRGZ, 24 Jul 2017Design beats function and performance. Really? S8 is among the best performing phones of this ... moreThey did. Because there is no flat screen option for those.
Curved screens also catch annoying light reflections no matter how you turn the phone away from a light source. Flat screens avoid this completely. This advantage is not new. The idea was promoted when televisions transitioned from curved to flat screens.
I much prefer a large flat screen. The Mate 9 is excellent. Samsung's curved screen does not do anything for me and video and images just look odd. I don't understand these 2:1 (18:9) screens either. TVs, videos, images are normally 16:9, so nothing fits right with 12:1 (18:9). Kind regards.
no tempered glass can be applied to edge(curved) screens. so,they are the most vulnerable phones. curved glass can support tempered glass, but with 2mm gaps on all edges. not looking so good. however, tempered glass fits 100% perfectly on flat screens. so,I prefer flat.
My cousin and one of my classmates both have curved galaxy s7 . The first time their phones fell on the ground , the gorilla glass got broken .
Screen bezels of My galaxy note 3 , after about three years of hard work , is scratched and doesnt look very nice , but the screen is intact .
Also I am not using any kind of screen protector or phone guard .
Flat screen is fine, but curved glass helps with edge swipes. I like ZTE's solution with the optical trick, looks almost as good as a curved screen but is much cheaper.

I love my s7 edge :)
Of course, FLAT SCREEN only. Especially for NOTE series.
with unwanted curved screen the stylus slips off screen edges, and you get horrible glares in videos and using the phone under lamps or the sun.
Curved edges must RIP.
[deleted post] I too play PSP emulator games on my phone. I also have a gamepad with phone holder. But I can't bring the gamepand with me everywhere. The mapping the volume buttons on the side is useful.

I too play PSP emulator games on my phone and I mapped the volume buttons for L and R keys which are on the side of the phone. It's convenient. Since they're buttons and not capacitive touchscreen, I can rest my fingers on them without pressing them, like you do on buttons of actual controllers.
The edge/curved screen is the worst phone design.
Easy choice, flat screens of course. Functionality over design any day. Speed over design any day.
Flat screen is the best option. Firmly holds in hands without chance to slip. Looks great. No popup on bottom of the screen. Everything is beautifully presented. Also most phones have bezels over the screen so when phone drops screen should be alright. Repair is not expensive not as curved screens also is more durable. Screen protector is easy to put on.
Curved screen: Look at Samsung. Always your bottom display pop up with something unwanted. Screen is less durable. Its super expensive so be ready for paying a lot of money for repair. Problem to put on screen protector and when you have it forget a book case or it will push your glass out of the phone. Bezel less phones are ugly and stupid. Its like a car without bumpers so its definitely fail innovation. Its slippery in hands especialy when raining or your phone is wet. When watching movie seeing moving pictures on bottom of the screen looks horrible.
Result Samsung S8 is worst phone on earth by design. Unless it will be prevailed by S9 or Note 8.
Anyway all the bezel less phones are horrible.
Kyo, 23 Jul 2017I love curved screens mostly because I play psp on emulator and have set the r&l key so th... moredo you play emulators with real physical controller ( like i do?) or just touch screen?
Give up the curved sceens. It is so useless and stupid. The image is distorted, the grip is poor. Just for the sake of design they sacrifice the most important thing: the functionality. Form follows function. I struggle every day with my Samsung S7 Edge. It is beautiful but useless

Actually I love curved screen. It looks so beautiful
I simply hate curved screens. They serve no useful purpose. They a are just a sales gimmick. If there are no side bezels it's hard protect the glass. Furthermore, one cannot hold the edges without touching the glass. The best screens have a flat screen that one can apply an inexpensive tempered glass protector to. I also dislike the way screens are being narrowed. I like to use phones in landscape mode. If they are skinny, there's not much showing above the keyboard.
