Weren't all the haters bashing Apple's ARKit saying it wasn't needed, already existed on Android etc etc. Suddenly Google launches ARCore and its of couuuurse a good idea lol.
In any case, analysts have concluded that Apple has the edge due to ARKit being on way bigger number of phones. Androids fragmentation works against it here.

Wishfull thinking...
AR is sw solution that use the existing(and well known) sensors,HW capabilities are much more restricted in comparison to Tango.
So if you are hoping to buy a next year phone and expecting miracle from it,you will be toroughly dissapointed.Moto G5 or (your fictional)S9 doesnt matter anymore ;)

Looks entertaining because digital things more interacting with reality. I can imagine AR guides with bunies and bears interacting with reality and introducing learn something. Its would be useful guides like for old people too to find something. Like AR Assistant. I starting like this very much can't wait to see what we will see next. Sure if for AR Bunie will give some AI brains it gives use some practical AR assistant usefulness (Aka Siri, Google asistant so on), and more interacting with reality and user what will encourage more practical use them.

AnonD-535480, 29 Aug 2017The problem with tango was the hardware. Android oem's barely makes any money (outside of Sam... moreMicrosoft already released something similar to ARkit and ArCore. However, no one knows obviously because it's MS. You can use it today with view3d app. The biggest problem for MS is the lack of a good mobile platform. Nothing they do will fix that problem.
Even something like AR glasses wouldn't do much for them. People don't want to go from using phone all day to dropping phone and using glasses all day. The only solution that will really work and allow Glasses to be small is a tethered solution. And Apple will be able to tether it to their iphones. This allows the phone to still be the central computing device and for the customer to take their glasses off and work on their phone. With A hololens solution you take your glasses off and you're no longer connected.

But what about the phones that is coming next year and the next. This is ARCore is initially for the old and new android phones. It means you will see much more capabilities with the new phones like the S9 and more.

Apple didn't know show anything become they know their phone is famous and a pop culture.
So when they put a feature like AR or if smaller feature, that feature becomes popular because their iPhone is already famous and their iOS as well. Plus it's a rich company, which can give money easily when making something.
