Apolodor, 12 Sep 2017Yeah don't judge the phone by dropping it. But when gorrila glass 5 marketing shit lies to you... moreMetals gets dents and glass breaks no matter Gorilla glass 5/10/20. First you bought a phone that costs a kidney, so you better be careful than hoping that phone doesn't get damage the instant it falls. You can do lot more with the phone than just showing off. Buy a case, just like majority of the people do or just regret if anything happens.

Many people are revealing their hate and frustration towards unforgettable memories of breaking their screen. Remember, it was you who broke it and not that it jumped by itself

But when gorrila glass 5 marketing shit lies to you and you drop it from 50cm when it slides of ( normal for that phone's size.) And it shatters like hell you'll start thinking that they are specially made to buy screen replacements. Welcome to this era. :(

Do you consider a success a flagship phone which brakes from knee height, has crappy cameras and hardly is availability anywhere 4 months after announcement? When iPhone 8 and Pixel 2 will come, Essential will be forgotten.

I'd like to see more phones made with real glass. Rather than have a phone that is against the inevitable, why not make the phone that is meant to break? Imagine walking into a hardware facility, picking up a sheet of glass, and saying "This will definitely work for my phone?"

If real glass isn't durable enough, a thicker "glass" would work better. My ZTE Whirl Z660G had very nice glass, with a few faint scratches. When I was done with it, the screen survived five hits with a 5 pound weight. The only way I could totally destroy it was propping it up at an angle, and whaling on it repeatedly.

i have meizu mx4, i broke the screen, but i already ordered a new screen for $19.72 from Aliexpress (quite cheap and the rating is good -.-). i tried to pull out the old screen and it was a success. no heat gun or any specific tech needed, just a '+' screwdriver and a razorblade. now waiting for the new screen to arrive and slap it into the phone.

i always happy dismantling old phone because it is quite simple. i am ok with fragile phone as long as it is easy to DIY. actually i broke its camera module also, replaced it with a brand new camera module for $3.60 from Aliexpress.

The ceramic is impressive here though, it is slightly recessed behind the metal frame? Whatever they've done, do it to the front of the next essential.

"Ceramic" is not a unique material. There are lots of different ceramics. The one used in the first Xiami MIX is brittle. This one is not. Simple.

Don't ever conclude that because a phone is made out of ceramic it is more or less brittle. That will wholy depend on what type of ceramic it uses.

So, why not ditch glass as a primary material for screens and return to a plastic composite or something that can flex on impact and not shatter like glass. Take your non glass screen; put a glass screen protector on it to provided the premium feel, cheap and easy to replace should it crack. The flexible plastic screen beneath won't shatter and the ceramic/titanium construction wont scratch or crack. Simple recipe for a phone that won't break when dropped from the height's we use it at.
