I think you're right. Nokia truly know how to build to their market and the 6500 classic is a design of ingeniuty. 6500 slide on the other hand is designed for amateurs. I can't wait to get my hands on the 6500 classic...
What is people's obsession with phones so slim, that they look/feel like toys? I like the fact that it isn't paper thin. I prefer phones with some solidity to them. I hate phones that are so light, they feel like you could break them if you sat on it while it was in your pocket. This is by far the nicest slider phone I have ever seen, and all I use is slider phones.
It was made with the finest materials, and doesn't compromise on the build quality. Why isn't it a smart phone??? Answer: Nokia decided not to make it one. They have people within their company that choose what to put or not put in a phone. It IS a mid range phone, so leave it at that. Nokia has plenty of smart phones to choose from. Bottom line is you can't make everybody happy, so if you don't like this phone, well then, there are hundreds of other ones that will suit your needs.
WELL DONE NOKIA....the 6500 SLIDER IS CLASSY!!!
Baphomet, i agree. Make it 3 years, V3 is on the market for about 3 years, it first came out as silver color, then black, and finally last year in pink.
But i'm sure nokia is way better then Motorola, 'cause Motorola phones got too much technical problems.
Legend82,
the thing is, for the last 2 years Nokia lost a bit of it's market share cause of it's big, fat and often ugly phones. The Motorola V3 is for 2 years on the market, it keeps selling like crazy, but Nokia has till 2day no phone that is as thin as the V3. For a very long time I use the Samsung D500, and I also have the Nokia 7650. For more than a year I'm looking for a perfectly designed Nokia to buy, and now I found it, at least I taught I did. I need a symbian cause I know how perfectly it works and what features it has. Other phones like the 6270, 6280, N80, N95 are just to big and to fat as I'm used to put the phone into my pocket. My samsung is going a little crazy so I'm forced to buy a phone in the next 2 weeks. You were right about the price of the 6500 slide with a possible s60 platform, but who cares? Aren't we all used Nokias big prices for it's in my opinion boringly designed phones:)? The N95 looks like it was designed in 2002. Right now I'm considering the E65 and the Iphone. The Iphone reviews will decide which phone I'm gonna buy.
I've got an N93 at the moment but it dawned on me the other day that there's no point in owning this phone since I just don't use it like a Symbian owner should. I never bother fiddling with download program, I have CDoom and a bunch of emulators but I never use them and the size just makes it inconvenient, as well as the rotating screen for camera shots, novel but awkward.
I'm gonna sell that and get the bronze classic, it's bloody gorgeous and does everything I need. No forward facing camera for video calls but only the deaf use that anyway. Should tide me over until they release an iPhone with 3G, until which I will not purchase one. I heard a rumour that it could be September for the 1st gen iPhone, and January for a 3G one (in Sweden anyway).
to F4pr,
You cannot say that the Nokia 6500 classic eats lesser mAh than SE W880i in general. Maybe while texting or listening to music, the W880i consumes less power.. and its the manufacturer's fault for adding the not so high battery capacity (which many people don't care).
and its true that a phone with a faster processor drains more battery power..but did you know that the upcoming Motorola Z6 has a 628mhz processor but its only using a Li-Ion 720 mAh battery. It still can last longer and have fast speed. This is because the way the processor was designed in a single core fashion (phones normally has two core processor).
do you know why sony P1 doesn't lag? Its because of its RAM not the interface. The P1 has plenty of RAM..more than most smartphones and RAM is important for web browsing and can also prevent crashes and hangs. You can tell if you used the N80 before.
I'm gonna stop using s60 and go with s40 phones now as the functions of s60 phones are not really needed, at least for me. and the 6500 slide seems like a good choice.
Baphomet,
There's no question that cell phone manufacturers should keep making their products better -- by adding newer and newer technology. Even those basic "call&text" phones should improve.
BUT the fact is that had Nokia put S60 on 6500 slide along with WI-FI, HDSPA and every other high tech feature, 6500 slide would cost 40-80% more. As this is a mid range phone that price would be just too high -- especially since Nokia has E- and N-series which have those features plus the high price tag.
So basically you and some of the others are saying that 6500 slide should be an N-series mobile, right? That IS what you're saying. I cannot understand why you don't realize that yes, technology should keep improving in all ranges (from top to bottom) but too rapid improvements on lower-range phones leads to riduculous prices.
I'm sure a number of don't even care about the price and can choose from LG Prada to N95 to 8800 Sirocco Gold edition to Vertu to whatever. However, most people don't want to spend a lot of money on mobiles with WI-FI, HDSPA, S60... They want a quality mobile that does what today is considered practical: call, text, take pics, listen to music and maybe do a little light surfing on the Net. 6500 slide has these features and then some. So stop bashing this mobile. If you want S60 then for goodness sake buy a mobile that has it (Nokia has plenty of those), and let people who don't need it buy this mobile.
BTW, I don't know if that whole XP vs. Vista point is a good one; many people think Vista sucks (at least right now).
To Suxd,
you should probably call Nokia and tell them to stop making better phones cause most people you know just use it for phoning and texting. You should also call Intel and tell them to stop making faster computers cause most people use it just for office and internet and the current once match the needs. By the way, you should call Bill Gates and tell him that the most people you know use XP and that there is no need for Vista.
Oh, I could continue till tomorrow but I'm having exams in 2 days, so I should probably learn.
Abayo
TO BwWV and Suxd,
the thing is, I need symbians as I'm used to install programs on my phones, but I'm also used to use the sexiest phones as well. Nokias symbian is the most advanced phone OS in the world. It really sucks that the 6500 slide doesn't support the S60 platform cause in my opinion it looks better than the N95 or the N80 or any other Nokia ever made. I guess the Iphone will have to do...
nokia 6500 slim i would like pass comment is that battery singnal as well as alreddy lounched nokia sets ?
price are not show on screen?
please set the prices look in to the middle class peoples? to afford that sets?
F4pr, you cannot say that the nokia 6500 classic eats up less mAh than SE W880i in general. While texting or listening to music, the W880i might consume less power.
About the faster processor consuming more power on a phone, its true.. but did you know that the upcoming motorola Z6 has a 628mhz processor and consumes much less battery power. This is because the way the processor was designed in single core (phones normally has two core processor) so its fast..only using a Li-Ion 720 mAh battery.
Do you know why SE P1 doesn't lag? Its because it has twice the RAM, not because of its user interface. Having plenty of RAM is important for smartphones especially for web browsing and can prevent crashes. You can tell if you used a Nokia N80 before.. and I would like to know some of the many killer function that Nokia phones has on its software.
I'm gonna stop using S60 phones (I think the features are not needed) and try S40 so the 6500 slide is ok for me to get.
something to state clearly to SE fans
Nokia battery life isn't that bad as you say. For example N95 with S60 interface need a higher proccesor then any phone. and argee it have low battery life but is because it is loaded with dual cpu with 330mhz proccesor and it's faster then any sony ones and bear this in mind the high mhz it is, the battery consumtion is higher. just like O2 or other windows phone.
ok, take the other point
Nokia 6500 classic loaded with S40, S40 doesn't need a high proccesor just a normal ones will do. it wont lag or anything. so compare those normal proccesor with your sonys one.
Nokia 6500 classic(same thickness with w880) :
Battery Standard battery, Li-Ion 830 mAh (BL-6P)
Talk time Up to 5 h 30 min
while Sony w880i :
Standard battery, Li-Po 950 mAh (BST-33)
Stand-by Up to 425 h
Talk time Up to 6 h 30 min
120mAh for an hour more? think about it. obivously nokia 6500 classic eats up lesser mAh.
and do you know why sony P1 doesn't really lag? look at the user menu and all, it doesn't have any difference in the graphic and all since 1 year ago so they could have a normal proccesor without any problem and also there will be more talk time. but for nokia's menu is going more and more to graphic and also having so many killer function and keep upgrading and so it will be laggy at times in nseries. but have you use n95, n93? they are loaded with 100 mhz more then n73 and those 2 device also experience in lesser lag and hangs. we need newer software interface grahpic not jus the same one and also same function.
ok make it clear, every nokia device have 330mhz or higher, it will take lesser time to load or be wont be laggy.
it's up to SE fans to accept. no offence^^
Titanite,
First about the design. I agree that U600 has a sleek cool design. However, it might interest you to know that Samsung Ultra Edition sliders have had such issues like screen breaking and wobbliness -- both the result of a mobile made of plastic and too slim. Just last week an acquantaince of mine had his D900 in his pocket and the screen broke. He had only jumped in the air for a few times. In all fairness, I haven't read any similar incidents with U600 (aside from wobbliness) but U600 even slimmer than D900. Slimness also affects on the keypad: if you make a mobile super slim, there's no room for an ergonomic keypad.
I'm gonna buy 6500 slide for sure (need a quality style mobile) and I can say for sure that 6500 slide isn't the best looking mobile out there. Mobiles such as U600 and LG Slide are better looking. However, 6500 slide isn't ugly and I'll buy it any day of the week and twice on Sunday then a mobile that has terrible OS (LG Shine), terrible ergonomics (LG Shine) or is just too slim (U600). U600 has received much praise and it is a good mobile but there's no doubt in my mind that sooner or later people with broken U600s start to comment on it.
Oh, one more thing. It's commonly agreed that Nokia beats Samsung hands down in call (receiving) quality. Also, one of the many downsides of superslimness is a bad battery life and U600 has a clearly below-the-avarage battery life.
If Samsung used metal in U600, made it a bit thicker with a Nokia-like keypad and improved a little on the battery-life and receiving quality, 6500 slide wouldn't have chance. However, right now Samsung is the premier example of compromising the actual quality and ergonomics of the mobile in order to get a pretty superslim mobile (with all the bells and whistless). U600 isn't awful like LG Shine, but those who say U600 is perfect and the slimness of it hasn't got any drawbacks are clearly biased and lying. I mean isn't even a matter of taste; it's a fact.
BTW, I'm not a Samsung-hater as my current mobile is a Samsung (D500).
Andrew, test samples, have you heard of such things? ;)
Hi guys!
I'm thinking of getting this phone and am comparing it with Samsung U600. In terms of features, they are both comparable. But I REALLY like the sleek design of U600, it is like it combines the Nokia 6500 Slide (features) and Classic (slim size). The only downside is the shutter speed and the lousy photos. Does anyone know of any independent review of Nokia 6500 Slide especially about its camera results?
Another thing which I hate is the micro dust that accumulates behind the screen. Has Nokia finally looked into this problem in 6500?
Nokia should also really look into improving its design (Samsung and LG are tops in this arena). Feature-wise I really like the logic of its OS but design-wise it is making me look like a dork compared to my contemporaries... :(
To bad it is S40 not S60! :(
It's funny to see that when people leave comments, they forget everyone else in the world can see their comment i.e Nokia EU Product Co-Ordinator. So where did you get the 6500 handset from?
I have nokia 6500 classic and it doesn't have FM radio. But it looks really stunning!! Build quality is so great!
It does have a FM stereo radio, however it doesnt feature RDS, but Nokias Visual Radio.
@Baphomet
Nokia are doing the right thing as S40 is super fast, reliable and doesn't annoy the crap out of people. It's also suitable for the masses which is the market these phones are aimed at.
S60 is slow, painful and rubbish. FACT.
